Loves London theatre

Every year I spend a wonderful four days in London, seeing as many theatrical productions as I can squeeze in. This year’s visit, in April, was one of my best experiences so far.

For convenience, I always find a hotel right off of the tube’s Piccadilly line. This time I stayed at the Grange Strathmore Hotel (58 Rochester Row, London, SWIP IJU, U.K.; phone +011-800-22-GRANGE or visit www.grangehotels.com). I paid £55 (near $98) for a single room with facilities en suite. It was very tiny but cute, clean and comfortable, with the friendliest staff that I have experienced in London.

The lobby and bar were lovely, and the big, sunny dining room was a delight. I started all my mornings there, taking advantage of the complimentary breakfast and chatting with other travelers about their plans for the day.

At 9:30 a.m. I would take the Piccadilly line to Leicester Square, where the official London tickets booth (“tkts”) opens at 10 o’clock each morning. I try to be there by
9:45, as the lines form rather quickly.

There are usually 20 to 25 productions listed on the board there, most at 50% off the regular price. They do take credit cards, and they’re happy to give you a map and explain directions to the theaters. I usually buy one ticket for a matinee and one for an evening performance. This leaves time to visit a museum and have a great meal in between shows.

My favorite new restaurant find this year is right in Leicester Square. Bella Italia (22 Leicester Sq., London, WC2H 7LE, U.K.; phone 020 7321 0016 or visit www.bellaitalia.co.uk) is a casual little Italian café with a wonderful view of the people walking in the square. I had a Buffalita pizza and a glass of Sicilia Rosso wine for less than £12 (near $21.50).

Most of the theaters are within walking distance of the “tkts” booth. I love to wander and enjoy the historic treasures that seem to be around every London corner.

Most of the theaters open a full hour before the shows, serving snacks and drinks in a lounge area. I enjoy getting there early enough to sit with a nice glass of wine and read the program. I’ve met many interesting people from around the world this way.

My two favorite plays this year? “Embers,” with Jeremy Irons, and “Mary Poppins.” Both were fantastic! I can hardly wait until next year.
