Landesmuseum Mainz
In Mainz, Germany, we found the Landesmuseum Mainz (Grosse Bleiche 49-51, Mainz; phone 06131/23295577 or visit www.landesmuseum-mainz.de [in German]. Open 10-8 Tuesday, 10-5 Wednesday-Sunday; entry €6 or free on Saturday), just down the street from St. Peter’s, a very worthwhile place to visit.
This museum houses treasures from the Stone Age to the present, with many Roman figures from facades of buildings plus the dismantled parts of an impressive original first-century column, the Jupitersaule, considered the most important Roman triumphal column found in Germany.
Upstairs there’s a wonderful collection of Art Nouveau glass magnificently displayed. The top floor is filled with German, Flemish and Dutch paintings well worth the time for viewing.
