Chad dangers
This item appears on page 20 of the September 2010 issue.
The Department of State warns of the risks of traveling to Chad and recommends avoiding all travel to eastern Chad, the Chad/Sudan border area and the Chad/Central African Republic border area.
This warning is due to the insecurity caused by high levels of violent crime (robbery, carjacking, kidnapping and murder), clashes between Chadian government and rebel forces, and the constant risk of conflict among the populations in these areas.
Criminal and rebel activity tends to increase during the dry season, from late September to July. The kidnapping risk seems to be rising.Â
