Super seniors and Elderhostel

I am writing on behalf of Elderhostel/Road Scholar (Boston, MA; 800/454-5768, www.roadscholar.org) in response to comments made regarding “super-senior” travel. Ms. Barbara Johnson (Jan. ’10, pg. 56) and Sue Hub (July ’10, pg. 42) each shared their opinion that our international programs are not intended for older travelers in their eighties and nineties. This is not the case, as Elderhostel welcomes all older adult lifelong learners on our unique Road Scholar learning adventures around the world.

Every Elderhostel/Road Scholar program is assigned an activity rating from Level 1 to Level 7 to guide decisions about which program best fits an individual’s needs.

And we wholeheartedly encourage participants to let us know about any disabilities or special needs they may have so that we may accommodate them. The varied accommodations and accessibility of international sites can pose challenges for some individuals who are less mobile, but arrangements can always be made to meet specific needs. Knowing in advance helps us to optimize the experience for everyone attending the program.

The mission of Elderhostel and Road Scholar remains the same, as it has for 35 years: to provide programs of exceptional educational quality and excellent value and the warm camaraderie of learning with other adventurous, open-minded adults. Our programs are designed for those who share a desire for ongoing stimulation, challenge and experience and — most importantly — a love of learning.
