In a 4-year remembrance project mirroring notable dates of World War I, which lasted from July 28, 1914, until Nov. 11, 1918, events timed to the 100-year anniversaries of various events are being planned in the Flanders region of northern Belgium. In one event on Oct. 17, 2014, called Light Front, 8,750 volunteers will hold torches along what was the front line between the Belgian and German armies during the Battle of the Yser. The line will stretch from Nieuwpoort on the North Sea through Ploegsteert on the French border.
Also, museum exhibitions will be held in Antwerp, Bruges, Ypres and Leuven.
