Off the Icefields Parkway in Alberta, western Canada, the new Glacier Skywalk opens May 1, 2014. A path has a series of stations explaining the Sunwapta Valley’s geology and history. Visitors then reach the U-shaped Skywalk, which juts out 98 feet from the cliff face. Through the glass floor of the open-air walkway, visitors can gaze down 918 feet to the valley below, which holds the 125-square-mile Columbia Icefield.

Skywalk is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in May; 9-6 June, July, Aug.; 10-5 Sept., and 10-4 Oct. 1-19. Entry, CAD24.95 (near $22) adult, CAD12.50 child.

The company Brewster Travel Canada (866/816 2758, www.glacierskywalk.ca) also offers trips out onto the glacier in specially modified buses. Including access to the Skywalk, the 80-minute glacier tour costs CAD64.95 ($58).
