Militants from Libya crossed into Tunisia and attacked a police station in the city of Ben Guerdane on March 7, killing 16 people, including seven civilians. Tunisian forces killed 28 of the militants during the attack. Tunisia then closed the nearby Ras Jdeir (Ras Ajder) border crossing with Libya.
A week before the attack, five militants from Libya were killed near Ben Guerdane by the Tunisian military. They were suspected of planning a terrorist attack.
As of press time, the Tunisian military was continuing operations against militants allied with Daesh who are inhabiting the desert around Ben Guerdane.
