Bird flu in China
At least 91 people in China died of the H7N9 strain of bird flu between Jan. 1 and March 3, 2017. The total number of cases reported, countrywide, during that period was 269, but the actual total is believed to have been much higher. In response, China temporarily shut down bird markets in areas where bird flu was present.
The symptoms of bird flu initially match the symptoms of the common flu: fever, sore throat, coughing and aches. However, the virus progresses into a more severe respiratory illness with a higher chance of fatality.
The Centers for Disease Control advise travelers to China to avoid all contact with poultry and wild birds, including those in markets and on farms, and to avoid eating undercooked poultry. The CDC recommends travelers immediately contact a doctor if flu-like symptoms occur after visiting China.
