Dubrovnik to curb tourism

The mayor of Dubrovnik, Croatia, announced on Aug. 11 that, within two years, the city plans to reduce the number of people visiting its walled Old City to only 4,000 per day in order to protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site from damage. UNESCO had recommended a limit of 8,000.

In 2016, 529 cruise ships carrying a total of nearly 800,000 passengers stopped at the city, which has a population of about 47,000. From 1991 to 2017, the population within the walled city dropped from 5,000 to 1,157. The city has become even more popular recently, as it is a filming location for the television show “Game of Thrones.”
