Egypt bombings

A car bomb attack targeting policemen in Cairo, Egypt, killed six officers and wounded several others, including four civilians, on Dec. 9. The bomb was detonated at a security check point on al-Haram Street, a main street leading to the pyramid complex at Giza. A militant group called Hasm, an ally of the Muslim Brotherhood, claimed responsibility for the attack. 

On Dec. 11, a suicide bombing at St. Mark’s, a Coptic Christian cathedral in Cairo, killed 24 people and injured more than 40. The Islamist militant group Daesh (ISIL) claimed responsibility, but the bomber was identified by Egyptian authorities as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Since a military coup ousted Muhammad Morsi, elected president and leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, in 2013, membership in the Muslim Brotherhood or allied groups has been illegal in Egypt.
