Iceland by Bus

It seems as if everyone is going to Iceland this year! I returned on July 7, 2017, from an excellent visit there and wanted to pass along something I wish I had known when I was making my plans. 

Iceland by Bus (icelandbybus.is), which also sells point-to-point tickets, runs a nonguided Hop On And Off bus that circles the whole country and makes multiple stops. A Full Circle Bus Passport costs ISK37,900 (near $364) and is good for up to two months (either clockwise or counterclockwise only).

For ISK59,900 ($575), you get the Ultimate Bus Passport, which offers the same options plus a transfer to the highlands and the “Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon” guided tour from Reykjavik. Details can be found at the website, which also includes information about camping and hostel accommodations.

Iceland by Bus is an agency operated by Sterna Travel (Reykjavik, Iceland; phone +354 551 1166, sternatravel.com). 

My friend and I took Sterna Travel’s 8-hour “Golden Circle - Green Energy” tour (ISK11,900 each) and were very impressed with their service. There were only the two of us and the guide, so, essentially, we had a private tour.

I booked the trip two months in advance but could have booked it the same week, if I’d wanted to.
