Short stay in Singapore

I wanted to add something to the information offered in “Thinking of Singapore” (Oct. ’17, pg. 53).

The easiest way to get to the Singapore Botanic Gardens (and, yes, they’re definitely worth seeing) is to take the subway. It deposits you just a few steps from the entrance.

I stayed at the Ibis (170 Bencoolen St.; phone +65 659 32 888, www.ibis.com), which is well located for walking to the colonial area and Chinatown and has easy access to the subway. Behind the hotel are interesting Buddhist and Hindu temples. Just a block away is a hawker center with a huge choice of cheap and tasty dishes ($4-$5).

My total bill for three nights in a single room at the Ibis, Jan. 8-10, 2017, was $433. This included a cell phone and unlimited calls anywhere in the world, a good buffet breakfast, a bicycle (which I didn’t use) and late checkout. The late checkout, around 4 p.m., allowed me to take a shower after sightseeing and before continuing on to Sri Lanka.
