Duomo’s extra security

In Florence, Italy, increased security at the Duomo (the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore), initiated in early 2018, has caused long wait times for visitors. The Duomo is most famous for its 15th-century dome designed by Filippo Brunelle­schi. It is recommended that visitors arrive early (before 8:30 a.m.), when lines are shorter.

No ticket is required to enter the cathedral, itself. However, tickets are required to visit the museum, baptistry, bell tower, crypt and dome within the Duomo. In addition, a time to visit the dome must be reserved in advance. A combination ticket, allowing entrance to each location, costs €18 (near $22). Ticket holders are not given preference in the security line.
