Bolivia’s president deposed

Bolivia’s president, Evo Morales, stepped down from office on Nov. 11 after intense protests, which were joined by police and members of the military, following a contested presidential election. The results of that election, which gave Morales his fourth term as president, were questioned by the Organization of American States, which was acting as a monitor and said it found evidence of widespread data manipulation. Mr. Morales was given sanctuary in Mexico.

Shortly after Morales, along with his vice president and allied leaders in congress, stepped down, Jeanine Áñez, the leading opposition senator, declared herself president, leading to further protests. A group of indigenous Bolivians who gathered in the town of Sacaba in support of Morales was shot at by police with live ammo, with at least nine people killed. Since the results of the election were announced, on Oct. 20, at least 29 protesters had been killed in Bolivia as of press time.
