Most people who travel abroad don't give a second thought that something bad could happen while away from home. My sister was traveling in Spain and had a boating accident that caused a head injury. She was rushed to the local hospital and had to undergo emergency brain surgery. Once she was stable and could be transferred, we arranged for her to be flown back home to the U.S. for rehab. A commercial flight was out of the question due to her condition. We contacted an air ambulance service and they quickly responded to our call. They were by her bedside the next day and brought her back home to Miami and she was able to be with family that supported her throughout her recovery process.

Medical Evacuation
Hope your sister has made a full recovery. That kind of situation is why I won't travel without medical evacuation insurance. It once got me home from Switzerland after I broke my wrist - much less dramatic, and by regular scheduled service, but still appreciated.
I recommend checking Seven Corners website for policies.
