It is just as much trouble to apply for a visa for a one time visit to India as it is for a multiple entry visa. Also US Citizens are allowed to have 5 and 10 year visas to India. It costs just a bit more, but worth it as it will save you time and trouble if you are ever planning to be in the area again on your way to Nepal, Sri Lanka the Maldives, etc. There is another message board which has had an on-going discussion about applying for India visas:http://www.oattravel.com/community/travel-forum.aspx?g=posts&t=4582
thanks
