We stayed at the Palazzo degli Schiavoni 5 minutes walk east of Piazza San Marco. It is in the Castello area on a side canal in a local neighborhood. They have apartments, rooms and breakfast. http://www.palazzoschiavoni.com/en/index.html
We booked, for one week, Carpaccio apartment for 4 persons (self catering - 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living/dining area, bathroom, view) and a room with breakfast for a family of 2 parents and a child.
Hosts are very nice, friendly and accommodating (re. tours). If interested, I suggest you book now as the rooms and September days are going.
