The Ghan railroad trip

We are a couple in our mid-seventies and we are thinking about taking the Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin next November, and then flying on to Auckland. Has anyone experienced any of the special tours in Alice Springs and Katherine? It will be hard to choose between helicopter flights and boat cruises and just wandering!
