In northeastern Somalia, an estimated 360 people were killed on Nov. 10 as a tropical cyclone made landfall around the state of Puntland. Puntland’s capital, Garowe, and the port area of Bosaso were damaged by flooding. Small villages along the coast near Cape Guardafui were devastated by the high winds and storm surge as were the towns of Beyla and Eyl in Nugal Province.

As the cyclone moved inland, heavy rains and high winds caused flash floods and further damage.

Sixteen people lost their lives on the Italian island of Sardinia on Nov. 18 during Cyclone Cleopatra. Heavy rains caused flooding in the city of Olbia, collapsing roads and bridges, inundating houses and washing away trees and cars. The storm moved on to mainland Italy, causing flooding in Crotone Province. 

The US Department of State advises against all travel to the Central African Republic (CAR). 

Indiscriminate violence and looting followed the March 2013 overthrow of the government of CAR, and the new transitional government has been unable to provide for security. In the absence of basic law and order, criminality has sharply risen.

In November, several militia groups agreed to turn over the bases they have held in Tripoli since Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi was ousted in August 2011.

Citizens of Tripoli have been protesting the armed presence of the militias for some time, and after one militia group opened fire on protesters on Nov. 15, killing more than 40, the government demanded the militias leave. Members of these militias may join the regular army or police force.

Suicide bombers attacked the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, on Nov. 19, killing more than 20 people and injuring 140. Bombs were detonated at the front gate and in the main courtyard. On Nov. 22, the Lebanese army defused a bomb discovered in a car loaded with 250 pounds of explosives in the Bekaa Valley. Both incidents have been linked to members of Hezbollah based in Lebanon who are supporting President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in Syria.

In Egypt, political unrest, which intensified prior to the constitutional referendum in December 2012, the anniversary in 2013 of Egypt’s 25th January Revolution and the July 2013 change of government, shows little sign of abating.

The US Department of State reports that tens of thousands of US citizens safely visit Venezuela each year but points out that violent crime in Venezuela is pervasive, both in the capital, Caracas, and in the interior.

On Oct. 26, an 85-year-old US tourist was escorted off of a plane by North Korean officials as his tour group was preparing to leave Pyongyang. At press time, he was still being detained. The tourist is a veteran of the Korean War and had discussed his opinions with a tour guide and another North Korean the day before. This is the first time a registered tourist has been detained.
