Travelers' Intercom

In regard to Stephen Addison’s comments in the letter “A Guide to Brussels’ Metro” (March ’15, pg. 12), I can only agree. I’m also an experienced traveler, and in November 2014, wanting to day trip to refresh memories I had of Brussels’ main attraction, the Grand Place, I arrived by Eurostar at the Brussels-Midi/Zuid station and found signage to the Metro in the vast station to be almost nonexistent.

On the Metro, I had to ask passengers where to get off, and on the street there was...

In northeastern Hokkaido, Japan, a group of five of us went to the Shiretoko Goko Lakes area (www.goko.go.jp/english) on Sept. 14, 2014.

From the parking area, there are two scenic routes that can be walked. The longer one, which we took, is a 3-kilometer-long ground path from which you can see five of the lakes. It’s hilly and, as I discovered after it rained, very slippery when wet, with water holes. There are also brown bears living along the route.

The scenery from...

During a 10-day adventure in Antarctica in late 2014/early 2015, our first onshore activity featured a visit to a penguin rookery. The penguins had built nests of small rocks and pebbles, and the females were sitting on their eggs. There were only several chicks visible, as hatching was slower than usual that season. We all were dressed in layers of clothing, anticipating a chilly experience (the temperature was 29ºF), but because there was no wind and the sun was bright, reflecting...

Arguably, the best gateway for trips to continental Europe is Germany’s centrally located Frankfurt Airport (FRA) (www.frankfurt-airport.com). In addition to a vast array of long-haul and short-haul air connections, it has an attached long-distance rail station with direct routes to a wide range of cities.

I suspect FRA is often overlooked by leisure travelers when they plan European vacations, since the city of Frankfurt, itself, isn’t a major tourist draw. However, there are a...

Before arriving in London, my adult son and I visited Rome, Oct. 24-29, 2014. We stayed at Hotel Fori Imperiali Cavalieri (Via Frangipane, 34, 00184 Rome, Italy; phone +39 06 679 6426, www.hotelforiimperialicavalieri.com) and were very satisfied. The staff was great, especially Paulo (I think that’s how he spells his name). He was a sweetheart.

My room had a balcony. It was very pleasant to sit out there and soak up the atmosphere. Our single rooms came to about $123 each per night,...

In northeastern China, my wife, Meg, and I visited Harbin, Jan. 19-25, 2015, to attend the International Ice & Snow Sculpture Festival (Jan. 5-Feb. 25, 2015).

We wanted to be near the tourist attractions and close to local transportation (taxis), and on Hotels.com I found the Holiday Inn Harbin – City Centre (No. 90 Jing Wei St., Daoli District, Harbin, 150010, P.R. China; phone +86 45184226656 or, in the US, 888/465-4329, www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/harbin/hrbch/...

Along with two other couples, my husband, Scott, and I arranged to rent a van in Sydney, Australia, for a week, March 20-26, 2014. We would drive east to the Blue Mountains and then north as far as Port Macquarie before returning the van in Sydney.

We picked up the vehicle from East Coast Car Rental (200 O’Riordan St., Mascot, NSW 2020, Australia; phone +61 2 8338 9111, www.eastcoastcarrentals.com.au), located near the Sydney Airport.

While finishing the paperwork, we were told...

Having traveled to more than 100 countries, my wife, Jane, and I were looking for an exotic, off-the-beaten-track destination. We found it in Guyana and Suriname, traveling there March 14-23, 2014, with Wilderness Explorers (141 4th St., Georgetown, Guyana; phone +592 227 7698 or, in the US, 202/630-7698, wilderness-explorers.com).

In arranging our private tour, we dealt mainly with Joetha and Amarylis, who answered our emails promptly and helped us prepare well for the trip.
