My husband, Jim, and I visited Nicaragua to experience the beauty of the land, lakes, volcanoes, art and history. Our 12-day custom trip, Jan. 19-31, 2012, from Latin American Escapes (Chico, CA; 800/510-5999), was a modified version of their “Magic of Nicaragua” itinerary. We saw everything we wanted to see and more.

Our private tour for the two of us cost $3,275 per person and included all land costs (except for tips and a few meals) and a round-trip flight from Managua to San...

We learned about TEO World Culture Tours (New York, NY; 888/444-1110), which specializes in small-group travel, from a letter in ITN (Aug. ’11, pg. 31). From June 19 to 29, 2012, our group of five friends enjoyed an incredible tour of Turkey under the personal guidance of company owner Tamer Teoman.

We had contacted a number of companies to help us plan our trip. Tamer was the only one to call to find out exactly what we had in mind and suggest the best way to organize our itinerary...

My husband and I and another couple booked a cruise with Silversea Cruises that included three days in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 18-20, 2012. We weren’t impressed with the ship’s shore excursion offerings, so I looked in ITN’s Mart classifieds section and found Dancing Bear Tours (Prospekt Kosmonavtov 15A-6H, St. Petersburg, Russia; phone +7 812 379 2633 or mobile +7 921 324 4640 or, in the US, 323/703-1542).

I contacted owner Julie on Feb. 15, and she emailed and also called me...

While visiting our son in Phnom Penh, my husband, Bill, and I stayed near the airport at the Cambodian Country Club & Hotel (Street 2004, Group 6 Toeuk Thla, Russey Keao district, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; phone 023 885 591 or 592 — club membership is not necessary to stay here), which I found on the Internet.

The price per night was about $56 for a double or $50, single. We were there nearly three weeks, Nov. 4-23, 2012.

The hotel building had about 25 big rooms, all with...

Four of us (two couples) spent a week in Rome, Dec. 26 2012-Jan. 3, 2013. As we have done for the past 20 years of traveling together during this holiday week, we rented a furnished apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. We always choose a central location.

We booked our apartment in Rome in March ’12, and we struck “gold.” The apartment (at 45 Via del SS Quattro) was located within a block of the Colosseum, which is impressive to look at from any...

My husband, Herb, and I rented a fantastic apartment in Paris, Le Buci (rue Buci, 6th Arrondissement, Saint-Germain-des-Prés), May 29-June 7, 2012, from AdrianLeeds.com. It’s on the Left Bank, and at €235 (near $306) a night it was well worth the price.

When you think of a typical Paris street, this was it — cafés, small restaurants, bakeries, a supermarket and St. Germain on one side, with the Seine and Notre Dame on the other.

Since I had been to Paris before, I just...

A cove on the rugged coast of the Crozon peninsula — Brittany, France.

We have visited France 30-some times but until recently had stayed only in hotels, mainly family-run places in small towns. We had noticed attractive vacation cottages for rent but learned that they generally go for a week at a time and almost always Saturday p.m. to Saturday a.m.

This never quite worked for us until 2012, when everything fell into place: flights, train schedules and an available rental near sufficient history/scenery/restaurants to keep us busy for at least a week....

The Dekeling Resort & Hotel in Darjeeling, India. Photo: Holt

During a March-April ’12 India trip, my husband, Clyde, and I arrived in Darjeeling late in the afternoon to check into the Dekeling Hotel* (51 Gandhi Rd., Darjeeling 734101, West Bengal, India; phone 91 354 2254159, fax 2253298 — room rates, INR1,400-INR3,300 [near $25.50-$60] per night).

I had sprained my ankle a week earlier in Kolkata, but the doctor we visited said I could hobble about with my walking staff, resting as needed. To my dismay, the Dekeling hotel’s lobby was four...
