I took the “Ultimate Africa: Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe Safari,” April 28-May 17, 2011, with Overseas Adventure Travel, or OAT (Cambridge, MA; 800/493-6824), visiting Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta in Botswana; Kafue National Park in Zambia, and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. It was 18 days from start to finish, 16 in Africa.

The southern region of Africa felt very relaxed, with none of the turmoil of the north. I found no anti-American slogans and, in...

My wife and I had visited most Eastern European countries in the past and were intrigued about the culture and history of Bulgaria and Romania, so we decided to go.

We went about planning for the trip in our usual style: studying as many guidebooks, maps and Internet articles as we could find, then arranging to fly to one of the capital cities, rent a car and explore the countryside on our own.

But our research quickly convinced us that driving on our own would not be a good...

Koper, Slovenia, was one of our last ports on a May-June ’11 cruise aboard the Nautica of Oceania Cruises (800/531-5619). Most of our shipmates who stayed in town or went on the ship’s tours were disappointed in this port of call, but our group of seven had a wonderful day. I would say it was one of my favorite ports, but, with an itinerary that included Istanbul, Kus¸adası, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice, that would be a stretch.

My wife, Susan, and I normally go off on our own, hiring...

Servimaster Tours (St. Sagárnaga No. 271-A [St. Linares/St.Murillo], La Paz, Bolivia; phone 591 2 2313002, cell 725 32355) arranged an excellent two-day/one-night trip for me to Lake Titicaca, Dec. 29-30, 2011.

I found them by walking down St. Sagárnaga, the main street of La Paz, where there are many tour companies and artisanal and gift shops. Servimaster’s office occupied a tiny, nondescript store, but their travel agents were excellent. This being one of the few times that I...

I had read about a taxi service in Bangkok, Thailand, owned by a woman, Rat Service (phone [66] 08 9108 2170, e-mail rat_bkk@yahoo.com), and decided to book her for my arrival transfer in November ’11. I contacted her a month ahead.

On our drive into central Bangkok, we talked, and I booked her for the following day for sightseeing and shopping.

Rat charges THB800 (about $25) for an airport-hotel transfer (she’ll wait for you in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign) and...

A tiny, picturesque country encircled by Italy, San Marino is the oldest surviving constitutional republic in the world, dating back to AD 301. It’s noted for its postage stamps and tax-free shopping.

For my son, Mark, and myself, I arranged a two-day trip to San Marino for October ’11 through Hotels.com (800/246-8357). For two people, round-trip air from Rome to Rimini, Italy, and two nights in San Marino, including breakfast, cost $1,100.

This was my first experience with...

At Passo Sella in the Dolomites of Italy, near Bolzano.

It was chilly in early May 2010 when I first visited Riva del Garda, Italy. It also rained almost the entire time. In 2011 I chose to arrive a couple of weeks later, May 19-21, and what I found was sunshine!

Rovereto is the train stop for Riva. From there, you take either a bus, which drops you in town (so you still have to get yourself to the hotel), or a taxi. I called efficient and English-speaking Christiano Toffola of Taxi 2 Taxi Rovereto (phone +39 33 88 445 445) and the ride...

My husband, Stephen, and I had two days in Buenos Aires, Argentina, prior to boarding Oceania Cruises’ Insignia, so we hired a driver and also a guide, Monica Varela (phone 11/15 4407 0268 or e-mail monyliv@hotmail.com or varmonica@gmail.com), who was recommended in the guidebook “Frommer’s Buenos Aires” (third edition).

On Dec. 22, 2011, the first day of our private tour, at 1:30 in the afternoon on a residential street, Stephen was attacked from behind by two men. He was put in a...
