During three wonderful weeks that my wife and I spent in Bali in September-October ’11, our vacation was made easy and enjoyable thanks, in large part, to our driver, Billy Dewa (e-mail billybaliman0908@yahoo.com), whose services we used on six occasions. For $40 per day, Billy — in his clean, air-conditioned SUV — would meet us promptly at our hotel in whatever part of the island we were staying. We would tell him where we wanted to go and he would take us there using routes that afforded...

The article “Will I Have a Medical Emergency Overseas?,” back in the August 2011 “Eye on Travel Insurance” column, discussed the likelihood of travelers needing treatment plus the types of coverage one might want. One key thing I felt the article did not place enough importance on was where one is going, such as Antarctica, Madagascar or Svalbard in Norway, to name a few of the more remote destinations, as opposed to visiting places like the major European capitals on a tour. Among the...

My companion, Abram, and I traveled to Paris the last week in October ’11 and used our Capital One Visa card and our Wells Fargo Visa debit card. We made about 15 purchases with the Capital One card and used the Wells Fargo card four times to withdraw euros from ATMs. When we got home and got our statements, our Capital One bill, as expected, included no foreign-transaction fees. Our Wells Fargo statement, on the other hand, was a shocker. On top of what we had withdrawn, we had been charged...

When I assemble an album of photographs from a trip, I place on the cover a picture of my travel group and the tour guide. It helps in bringing back memories of the trip as a whole, in addition to the specific memories evoked by the pictures in the album. PHIL HUGILL Bethesda, MD

We traveled to Sri Lanka primarily to see the Kandy Nawah Maha Perahera, the Pageant of Kandy, an absolutely exciting procession honoring the relic of the tooth of Buddha. This festival is held for about 10 days, with the last day falling on the first full moon in August (for 2012, July 23-Aug. 2). We attended the procession on the eighth night. The streets were packed and there was a carnival atmosphere. Then the procession began, with men cracking whips as they walked down the street. They...

For independent travelers who drive, Japan and Russia would seem to offer some obstacles, but I would dismiss these, as there are great benefits to driving in both countries. The independence factor is what applied in our experience.

We drove in Japan, May 3-17, 2010, never getting lost. From home, I had prebooked a car from Hertz (800/654-3001). I was even able to speak to an American in Tokyo to ask a few questions.

After experiencing the giant-kite festival in Hamamatsu,...

I read with great interest Yvonne Michie Horn’s article on Kings Landing Historical Settlement (Dec. ’11, pg. 60). ITN readers may also like to know about the Acadian Historical Village (14311 Rte. 11, Rivière-du-Nord, N.B., E8N 2V6, Canada; 877/721-2200 — open 10-6, June 10-Sept. 22; $16 adult, $14 senior, and children six and under free).

Also in New Brunswick province, the village is near the city of Caraquet, and, similar to Kings Landing, it represents life in early French...

Over the past 33 years I have used many beauty salons all over Europe, and I have nearly always found that European hairdressers do a very poor job when compared with most American hairdressers.

However, in October ’11 I happened to find a fantastically good hairdresser in Lucerne. Her name is Evelyne Nussbaumer and she is a stylist at Rolf Fax Intercoiffure (Gerbergasse 6, 6004 Luzern, Switzerland; phone 041 410 61 10 or 041 410 60 13).

This shop is located close behind the...
