Travelers' Intercom

My friend Sue and I, both in our eighties, are always looking for a destination to which neither of us has been. Therefore, we were delighted when our travel agent recommended a cruise on the Douro River, which originates in northern Spain and flows west across the northern part of Portugal into the Atlantic at the city of Porto.

We booked the cruise through Uniworld (Los Angeles, CA; 800/733-7820) and on May 26 flew to Lisbon. We spent three nights in that charming city, then were...

It was my privilege to visit Tiya as part of a trip to Ethiopia with Spiekermann Travel Service (Eastpointe, MI; 800/645-3233) in January ’11. Tiya is regarded as the most important of the 160 archaeological sites in the Soddo region south of Addis Ababa.

Thirty-six huge stone monoliths, 32 of which bear strange carvings of swords and other signs and symbols, stand clustered in the tall grasses of a large field less than a kilometer outside the small town of Tiya. The stelae...

My partner, Carolyn, and I took a three-week trip to Switzerland, Bulgaria and Romania, Feb. 26-March 19, 2011, with Far West Ski Association (310/319-3757). This trip, like others organized by the FWSA about March every year, was part skiing and part touring.

Each week could be booked separately, but the cost for all three weeks was about $4,200 per person. That included transatlantic airfare from San Francisco or Los Angeles; 20 hotel nights in three- and four-star hotels; all...

I am so grateful to ITN subscriber Nancy Anderson (Feb. ’07, pg. 67), who told of her excellent experiences with Mehmet Ozbalci, owner of Turfantastik (Millet cad. Inan Is Hani No. 5/610, Aksaray, Istanbul, Turkey; phone [90] 212 589 33 25). I had kept her article, as I knew I wanted to visit Turkey.

When I Googled Mehmet’s name and saw that he was the tour operator retained by several well-known US, Canadian and Australian photo-tour companies, I was even more anxious to...

1910 Hupmobile at Museo del Automóvil — Montevideo.
In Montevideo, Uruguay, the Museo del Automóvil (Colonia 1251; phone 902 47 92), at the corner of Colonia and Yi streets, is a hidden gem in more ways than one. First, none of the tourist information my wife and I collected in Uruguay mentioned the museum. My wife and I learned about it from the Uruguay chapter in the 2010 Lonely Planet guidebook “Argentina.”

Sure, we know that US passports are good for 10 full years. Well, almost! In some cases, it’s 9½ years.

Many travelers are not aware of the “six months rule”: your passport must be valid for six months beyond the end of your intended trip. If it isn’t, don’t expect to get past the airport check-in counter when heading overseas.

In another nightmare scenario, what if you reached your intended destination halfway around the world only to be...

Less than an hour’s drive west of the Auckland airport on New Zealand’s North Island is Bush Sand & Sea B&B (26 Te Aute Ridge, Bethells Beach, Waitakere City, Auckland, N.Z.; phone 0064 9 810 9584). Nestled in thick rainforest near Bethells Beach (Te Henga), this charming cottage sleeps two to four.

After a month’s travel through New Zealand in March ’11 (Aug. ’11, pg. 17), my partner, John, and I were looking for a place to spend our last couple...

Starting in Geneva, our small group of six took a train to Visp, then rode the Glacier Express for an hour through breathtaking Alpine valleys to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. The mountain was awesome, but our most lingering memory is most likely to be Hotel Aristella (Steinmattweg 7, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland; phone +41 0 27 967 20 41).

For a night’s stay there on July 10, 2011, the hotel had been selected for us by the travel agency my wife, Linnea, and I used, Adventures in...
