The “Where in the World?” picture of the tannery in Fez, Morocco, and those dying vats reminded me of when I bought a leather handbag in the shop above the tannery in December ’09.

I had to turn the bag inside out and hang it outside for two months to get the awful smell out! They don’t process leather very thoroughly, and it was really rank.

But, at $10, the price was right — and now it’s a very nice bag.

Strolling along Avenida del Libertador in Buenos Aires on an April-May ’10 trip to Argentina, I passed a building identified as the Automóvil Club Argentino (1850 Avenida del Libertador, Buenos Aires; phone 0800 777 2894), easily identified by the yellow flags out front and the steady stream of locals coming and going to renew their driving permits and tend to other bureaucratic business.

On a whim, I doubled back and entered the lobby. A pair of vintage Fords flanked the sunlit...

My partner, John, and I spent the month of March ’11 touring New Zealand. The night before our flight home from the Auckland airport, we stayed at the friendly Parnell Inn (320 Parnell Rd., Auckland 1052, New Zealand; phone 09 358 0642 or, toll-free in NZ, 0800 472 763), located on the very charming Parnell Road.

Our large studio room cost NZD125 (near $100). It was a quiet room with plenty of space for end-of-trip repacking. The small refrigerator and tea/coffee-making supplies,...

My nephew, David, and I took a private tour of China, March 17-April 4, 2011, arranged by Karen Yang of China Highlights (No. 11 Binjiang Rd., Guilin, GX541002, P.R. China; phone toll-free, in China, 800/8793-007 or, in the US and Canada, 800/268-2918). It was a fantastic trip. The cost for all land arrangements, except for most dinners, was about $3,800 each.

The guide and driver in each city were excellent, meeting us at each airport. With only the two of us passengers, we were able...

I have a heart condition and need to use a wheelchair in airports.

On Sept. 3, 2010, I had a four-hour layover in Miami between an American Airlines overnight flight arriving from Seattle at 7:15 a.m. (I flew on Alaska Airlines, but it was a code-share flight through American) and an American Airlines flight to Caracas scheduled to depart at 11:05 a.m. — plenty of time for a big breakfast to make up for having no dinner the night before, or so I thought.

All deplaning...

I have some observations about the security we experienced during our May 4-24, 2011, cruise from Dubai to Italy, including a transit of the Suez Canal and port calls in Oman, Jordan, Egypt and Israel. My husband and I were on the “Three Seas Adventure” aboard Seven Seas Voyager of Regent Seven Seas Cruises (Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 877/505-5370).

While going through the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, the captain announced that we would be in convoy with some warships but that if we heard an...

I took the 14-day cruise “God Created the Kornati Islands,” aboard the 350-passenger Aegean Odyssey, with Voyages to Antiquity (Ft. Lauderdale, FL; 877/398-1460).

The trip, Aug. 23-Sept. 7, 2010, was booked through TravLtips (Flushing, NY; 800/872-8584). (TravLtips, known for booking freighter cruises, has started booking cruise liners but only for cruises of two weeks or more.)

$3,745 included free round-trip air (in my case, from Portland), 10 shore excursions, transfers,...

My friend Eileen Mine and I took the 13-day “Eastern Europe & the Black Sea” river cruise with Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; 800/959-0405), May 1-13, 2010. Including round-trip air from Raleigh-Durham airport, it cost $3,564 apiece.

Aboard the River Concerto, we sailed over 1,100 miles on the Danube, with visits in Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and, finally, Romania.

There were three Program Directors on board the ship: the leader, Miklos Maleczki, a native of...
