About an hour north of Cape Town, South Africa, on Route R27, West Coast National Park provides a totally different view of the coast and wildlife. Recommended! On your return to the city, watch for Rietvlei Nature Reserve, south of a small town named Table View. If the tablecloth (clouds) are covering Table Mountain, stop for a moment and observe Cape weather in action. It was from there, in October ’07, that I took this picture, about six miles northeast of Table Mountain, seen looming...

I always use Rick Steves’ wonderful guidebooks for the basic, nitty-gritty information about traveling in Europe. However, he assumes that you will have only a week in Paris and tailors his recommendations accordingly. For those of you privileged to spend more time there, I have some ideas of things to see and do.

I exchanged houses with a young couple in Paris for two weeks in May ’10. The chance to live in a flat instead of a hotel was a treat, not to mention that it saved me a lot...

Having a layover of about nine hours at London Heathrow, I decided to take the bus the 45 minutes to Windsor Castle for a visit. It proved to be a lovely experience, despite the 35°F temperature and the snow flurries that occurred on Feb. 8, 2010.

From the new Terminal 5, the local blue bus (numbers 71 and 77) leaves from platform 9, right outside Terminal 5. Ask, as one bus is more direct than the other.

For £5.4 (near $8) round trip, I was transported through the countryside...

My wife and I spent three weeks in the Oslo area with our daughter’s family in May ’10. We stayed at their home in Skui, but our experiences and observations may be of interest to others traveling to Norway.

Having previously visited Oslo and Bergen and taken one of the coastal ships to the North Cape, we knew that Norway is expensive, that most Norwegians speak English and are friendly and that the scenery is fantastic.

Oslo’s airport is excellent. It has good shops, and there...

When packing, roll clothes, when appropriate, especially to fit them between ribs of the suitcase handle. Put rarely used items on the bottom and those often used on top. Use flat folds for other items.

I carry a small bottle of wrinkle remover. I take out the items I will wear the next day, hang them in the closet and spray them for wrinkles, if necessary. If it’s not necessary, I still have the next day’s outfit ready to go.

Another way to remove wrinkles — hang the day’s...

I can’t believe that on my first trip to Rome, about 20 years ago, I carried shoe polish and a travel iron! Since then, I’ve condensed what I take, traveling with a carry-on only and doing laundry as I go along.

I agree with other travelers that wrapping wet laundry in a towel and wringing it helps it dry faster. But rather than carry laundry soap from home, I do my laundry with whatever is available in the hotel — from shampoo to cakes of soap — and my clothes look just fine.

My son and I went on the 19-day “Heart of India” tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (Cambridge, MA; 800/493-6824, www.oattravel.com), Oct. 27-Nov. 14, 2009. For me, India was not primarily about the castles, ruins, museums, shrines, etc.; it was the atmosphere.

While at the Ranthambore Game Preserve we had about given up on seeing a Bengal tiger, but at the end of our game drive we came upon one just getting up from its nap and strolling off. Magnificent — a sight I’ll never forget...

My wife and I took a world cruise with Cunard Line, the first leg of which was from New York City to Southampton, England, on the Queen Victoria, Jan. 12-April 22, 2010. At the end, we sailed from Southampton to New York aboard the Queen Mary 2, April 22-29.

We had also cruised with Cunard in January 2004, March-April 2006, January-April 2007 and March-April 2008. Each time, our bills were settled when the cruise terminated; the company put all of its charges through at the end of the...
