Travelers' Intercom

I enjoyed reading the letters from people who travel with a minimum of high-tech equipment (Sept. ’19, pg. 29). My husband and I have been using “dumb” flip phones. I do have a tablet that I use for email, since friends at home like to read my daily trip reports, plus I have my books loaded on it. But something happened on our last trip that made me rethink not having a smartphone.

Our luggage got left at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol when we flew through to...

Art Nouveau architecture Merano, Italy

A beautiful example of Art Nouveau architecture, the Kurhaus in Merano (aka Meran), Italy, is a reminder of this South Tyrolian city’s importance as a spa town in the second half of the 19th century. Opened on New Year’s Eve, 1914, this grand building, designed by Viennese Secessionist architect Friedrich Ohmann, was built to expand on the original spa that served Europe’s upper class as the town’s popularity grew. Renovated in the 1980s, it now serves as a stylish...

My wife, Thea, and I have visited Amsterdam in the Netherlands several times over the last few years, most recently in June 2019. We often get asked by friends and family for advice about visiting there, so I came up with the following notes.

Amsterdam is a great city for just “chilling” — wandering around the centre, enjoying a coffee or beer, watching people, window-shopping, etc.

Beware of bicycles. Cyclists will ring their bells and expect you to...

Travelers can experience many of Monaco’s attractions with a day trip from the French Riviera or an excursion from a cruise ship. The tiny Principality of Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world (the Vatican is smaller); however, it seems larger when you try to visit all of its top sights in a single day.

The Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the Monaco Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum are all conveniently clustered in Monaco-Ville. The high ground of Monaco-...

For our May 2019 trip to Azerbaijan, my wife and I booked Elnur Babayev as our driver/guide. We found him on TripAdvisor and contacted him through his website, bakuguide.ga.

The booking processes went smoothly, with Elnur communicating promptly by email in good English, and we soon had our itinerary set for Azerbaijan. We paid $950 for a 4-day tour, including hotels with breakfast.

My wife and I flew to Baku, and Elnur (who also goes by the nickname Elba) was waiting for us at...

My wife and I took a private tour of the Balkan countries with Bulgarian guide Martin Semerdjiev (martinert@yahoo.com). We selected him after seeing a reader’s report in ITN (Dec. ’18, pg. 36). It was a bit of a risk to sign on to spending 24 days with one person, but we were very pleased with the result.

Starting and ending in Sofia, Bulgaria, we did a loop, going to Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Romania. Martin planned where we would...

If you’re crazy about wildlife, enjoy small-group travel, are reasonably mobile and want to learn about unique cultures, the “Amazon Riverboat Adventure in Depth” cruise is for you. I took this cruise in Peru, June 30-July 8, 2018, with G Adventures (Toronto, Canada; 888/800-4100, www.gadventures.com).

Sharing accommodations, I paid $1,662, which included two internal flights, two nights in a hotel in Lima, two bus rides from Iquitos airport to Nauta and back, six...

Since I was going to be in Italy for a tour of Tuscany in early May 2019 (Aug. ’19, pg. 6), I decided to stay on to spend time with my friend Maria Rizziello.

I met Maria in 1999 when I traveled with her company, Treasures of Italy (Asti, Italy; email treasuresofitaly@outlook.com or visit www.facebook.com/TreasuresofItaly), to celebrate my 30th birthday. I was then invited to travel with the company as a representative of ITN twice in the years that followed (Jan. ’09, pg...
