On All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, 1755, an earthquake estimated at 9 on the Richter scale struck Lisbon, Portugal; it was felt from Ireland to Morocco.

In September ’07, on the “Downtown” tour with Lisbon Walker (Rua dos Remédios 84, 1100-449 Lisboa; phone [+351] 218 861 842, www.lisbonwalker.com), our guide, Rita, met us in Comércio Square, where this statue of King José I presides.

The king and the rest of the royal family were in Belém at the time of the...

Our daughter and 14-year-old grandson spent two weeks with us in Italy in July ’09.

For our flight home from Venice, we needed to get from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop (near Piazza San Marco) to Marco Polo Airport. We learned about the new bus number 5 from Piazzale Roma (across from the train station) that allows travelers to go directly to the airport in 30 minutes instead of having to resort to one of the VERY expensive private water taxis or going to Mistra on the mainland to...

Here are some notes on Spain from a trip my wife, Betty, and I took to the Costa Blanca area for a week and a half in April ’08 before continuing on to Greece. It was our first trip to either country.

We found southeast Spain to be very beautiful. We stayed with our friends Bob and Maryann, of Connecticut, who had rented a villa for a month, and our friend Jan, of Kansas.

The villa was very high on a hill outside of the village of Moraira. The view of the Mediterranean up and...

I traveled solo in Turkey for 26 days in May ’09. May is off-season in Turkey, but the temperatures were perfect and there were no crowds at the historic sites.

Excluding airfare, my total expenses in Turkey for the entire month were $950.57. This included all transportation, lodging, meals, a phone card, entry to historic sites, a few souvenirs and, on several occasions, renting mopeds.

At all the hotels and pensions at which I stayed, my room price was for one-person...

My wife, Guyette, and I in late 2006 booked a fall 2007 trip on the Trans-Siberian Express, Moscow to Vladivistok, through MIR Corp. (www.mircorp.com). MIR booked the train portion of the trip as well as two business-class seats (at $2,184 each) with Aeroflot for a flight from Vladivistok to Moscow at the trip’s conclusion. For the round-trip flight from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Moscow we purchased our own tickets through Delta.

All went well on the 13-day train trip through eight...

My husband, Richard, and I made reservations with Norwegian Cruise Line on Feb. 9 for an 18-day cruise from Santiago, Chile, to Los Angeles aboard the Norwegian Sun, April 12-30, 2009.

On the phone, I was quoted a total price that included round-trip airfare (Los Angeles-Santiago) and insurance. I asked about our air schedule and they said they would let us know two days later what it would be. I also was told that if we wanted to reserve the cruise, we needed to pay right then, as...

I’m writing in response to the subscriber’s letter titled “Cruising ‘Italian Style’ on Costa Europa” (July ’09, pg. 31), which listed multiple complaints. My friend and I, both Americans, were also on the Jan. 17-31, 2009, sailing of that ship, in the Indian Ocean, for which the base price was $3,340 plus a fuel supplement of $252. (I purchased my own air.)

We and four other Americans dining with us daily did not share the above-mentioned subscriber’s opinion. We did not spend time...

A month-long trip to France and Ireland, March 3-April 5, 2009, was the best trip of my life. The total cost was between $11,000 and $12,000, but I had a lot of individual tour guides and a driver for my entire stay in Ireland.

I visited Cork, Cobh and Kinsale in Ireland but stayed overnight only in Cork.

In France I visited the spectacular castle in Carcassonne and stayed overnight in Rennes, Toulouse, Montpellier, Avignon, Lyons and Dijon. I must say that I liked them all,...
