I use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea. There’s no oxygen tank; it’s just a machine. On flights, I’ve always taken aboard a carry-on, my purse and the CPAP. However, often I’ve put the CPAP in my checked baggage simply to avoid having security have to confirm that it is what it is. I don’t need it on the plane or when sitting up anyway, only when lying down.

FAA rules state that medical devices can be carried in addition to the normal carry-...

We did the tour “Unforgettable Spain and Portugal” with Grand European Tours, Oct. 3-17, 2007. The tour itself, starting in Madrid and ending in Lisbon, was very good (I just looked at the pictures again) but for one thing.

We had a bus with a bathroom, but the guide told us not to use it as it was too difficult to clean.

She said to tell her if we had to stop, which was done with her remarks, “It’s five miles out of the way, but if you have to go, you have to go.”

Not a...

Following up on my letter in the August ’08 issue, page 26 (“Rental Damage-check ‘Grace Period’”), about my being charged by Europcar for scratches on a car in the UK, American Express has paid the $169.56 as an insurance item and has credited my account accordingly.

We took a magnificent 14-day tour of Antarctica and the Chilean fjords with Smithsonian Journeys (Box 23182, Washington, D.C. 20077-0843; 877/338-8687, www.smithsonianjourneys.org), Jan. 9-23, 2008.

The cost for two was $19,078 including airfare from New York’s JFK to Buenos Aires and Ushuaia, Argentina. We bought trip insurance, at $1,700 for the two of us, primarily because of JFK in January and having only one chance to meet the boat in Argentina.

All meals (and gourmet...

I spent seven days in Madeira, starting May 22, 2008. This trip was offered by Sun Holidays (7932 W. Sand Lake Rd., Ste. 302, Orlando, FL 32819; 800/422-8000 or 407/345-0100, www.sunholidaytours.com). Kristen Molloy handled my reservations and did a superb job.

The package included transatlantic airfare; hotel; airport/hotel transfers; a half-day tour of Funchal; daily buffet breakfast at the Baia Azul Hotel, and three buffet dinners at this hotel plus three vouchers for dinners at...

My husband, Andy, and I were part of a group of six traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, in September’07 to join a cruise. We arrived early so we could see the city in more depth.

Kagan Kosagan of Tours in Istanbul (Lion Team Altiyol, Onur Ishani 309/3, Kadikoy, 34714 Istanbul, Turkey; phone +90 216 338 87 76, e-mail kosagan@yahoo.com or visit www.toursinistanbul.com) was a joy to work with, and our guide, Deniz Polat, was excellent. She listened to our wants and met all our needs.

Tourism in Bali, Indonesia, continues to make strides toward normalcy, but there are still peaks and valleys with bookings.

I am able to get great rates to Bali with Sayang Holidays (220 Montgomery St., Ste. 469, San Francisco, CA 94104; 888/472-9264 or 415/986-1293, www.sayang holidays.com) for two basic reasons: they have great contracts annually with Singapore Airlines and they have a connection with Indo China Services in Bali. Someone from ICS does the deals for all of my...

On a trip to Malaysia, my significant other, Frank, and I spent a night in Kuala Lumpur where, if a visitor does nothing else, seeing the Petronas Twin Towers is a must. Guided by the spirals, and with help from a watch compass, we walked there from our hotel (the Alpha Genesis Hotel (formerly Allson Genesis), approximately $65 in March ’07).

Joined by a bridge at the 41st floor, the towers herald K.L. as an industrial and cultural center. This world-famous glass-and-steel structure...
