I was on a trip to the North Pole, July 5-28, 2007, with Quark Expeditions (Darien, CT; 800/356-5699, www.quark expeditions.com). The group met in Helsinki and flew to Murmansk, at which time a couple from South America was refused entry into Russia. They had made a short, pre-North Pole trip to St. Petersburg each with a single-entry visa.

Once the rest of us were settled on the ship, a number of us looked at our visas and obviously were unable to determine if they stipulated single...

On our trip to the Azores in spring 2006, in the town of Velas on the island of São Jorge I went one morning to withdraw money from the ATM at the local bank. The screen gave me a message that the machine was not, at the time, operative. Needing cash that day, I went inside the bank and asked the teller if I could withdraw money.

“Of course,” was the reply.

I had more than enough money in my account. I took the bank at their word that they would process the withdrawal just as...

We have used our ATM card around the world and never had a problem. What a shock to find it would not work in Portugal, of all places, in May ’07. Two banks verified that the ATM system that works through MasterCard had been down for weeks.

Our travel friends were able to bail us out, thank goodness (their card had a Visa symbol on it instead of MasterCard), but we ran into other couples who were stranded and trying to get money wired from the USA.

Before leaving, I had...

I was in Thailand in February ’07 and made four cash withdrawals at ATMs using my Visa card. The withdrawals totaled $1,152.

My next Visa statement showed I was charged a total of $71.46, attributed to finance charges for these transactions. The sketchy explanation on the statement indicated a fee of $10 per transaction for a total of $40. An interest charge at 23.99% had also been assessed, as best as I could determine, on ALL of my Visa charges for the period, even though without...

A quick comment on cell-phone parking lots at U.S. airports, mentioned in the September ’07 issue, page 2. . . In July ’07 we had occasion to try the lot at Orlando International Airport while collecting some members of the London Symphony Orchestra for the Florida International Festival in Daytona Beach.

This was not the greatest experience, as the lot was only half paved and had no information except a board showing which airlines arrived at which terminal.

More inconvenient...

My daughter, who is a medical missionary in Togo, said she needed an international driver’s license to drive in Ghana for supplies. I was going to get one for her, so I went on the Internet and found all kinds of websites for these licenses. Of course, each wanted my credit card number, etc., in order to process the paperwork.

Be aware that any such website is a complete and total scam. There is no such thing as an international driver’s license. There is, however, an International...

In July ’06 I made a deposit of $2,400 for trips on the following Shongololo Express trains in Southern Africa: Good Hope, March 6-21, 2007 ($3,680), Dune Express, March 27-April 11 ($3,905) and Southern Cross, April 11-26 ($4,350) — total cost, $11,935.

So it was with concern that I read in ITN the news item “South Africa Train Woes” (Nov. ’06, pg. 24), which stated that Spoornet, the national rail operator in South Africa, had announced it could not guarantee the availability of...

My husband, Jim, and I took a trip from Cape Town, South Africa, to Chobe National Park in Botswana by way of Victoria Falls, Feb. 19-March 5, 2007.

The trip was set up by Deborah at Wild African Ventures (10505 Wheatland Ave., Shadow Hills, CA 91040; 800/358-8530, www.wildafricanventures.com) and included a 16-day train trip with Shongololo Express. Including the $700 cost for all excursions (a light package is available), the train trip cost $4,284 per person in a Commodore suite...
