ITN was mailed a copy of the following letter, sent by a reader to Virgin Atlantic Airways.

In September 2005 I took Virgin Atlantic flight No. 8, Los Angeles-London, returning on flight No. 23, London-Los Angeles, on the 14th. Flight 8 was a delight, but I am still recovering from the effects of flight 23. It’s about a kid who screamed for five minutes every 15 minutes for 13 hours nonstop, starting in the Heathrow Airport departure lounge.

When traveling out of Las Vegas on Southwest Airlines, my husband, Steve, always goes to our favorite airport sandwich shop, Capriotti’s, and buys us each a sandwich for the flight. On Christmas eve 2004 he ordered an extra Italian sub for the crew on the plane and told the guy behind the counter what it was for. At that, the sandwich shop guy threw in a turkey sandwich with all the trimmings. Together, they could feed four.

In a letter on a tour in Turkey (March ’06, pg. 50), the reader mentioned that their two days of touring cost $562 for two people. I noticed while reading the letters submitted for the piece “The Good or Bad Tour Guide” (June ’06, pg. 50) as well as some comments printed in “Travelers’ Intercom” that many writers offered ways to augment their tour experiences.

For instance, “If a tour includes all meals, pass up some and find local eateries. We came across some excellent food away from the group choices.” One traveler carried personal guidebooks to read during the “eternal lecture.” Another urged tour flexibility...

I enjoyed the article “Vietnam — Personalizing the Experience” in the June ’06 issue, as I had made a similar trip in March 2001. Mr. Emmet’s one criticism seemed to be that the guides, in regard to their English abilities, “could not handle more than simple declarative sentences” and he hoped this would improve as tourism built in Vietnam.

The first segment of our 3-month self-drive Southern African odyssey a few years ago took us from Johannesburg to Botswana through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in our rented 4X4 Toyota camping-equipped truck.
