The finest pastry shop in Europe, maybe in the world, is in Vienna, Austria: Demel (Kohlmarkt 14, Vienna, A-1010 Austria; phone +43 1 535 17 17 39).

It has the best chocolate desserts — always many different kinds and all delicious. These yummies are at the back of the store (i.e., restaurant). We had lunch there a few years ago and remember it with much pleasure. It’s unforgettable!

Prior to traveling in Mongolia and China in April ’05, I called Orchard Bank to tell them that I would be using their MasterCard while overseas. Even with that, it didn’t work in the ATM in Beijing nor anywhere else, for that matter! I also had a TJX Capital One Visa card and a debit card, however, and both worked fine.

The same MasterCard did not work on a trip to the “Stans” the following month, although, again, my Capital One Visa card did work. In fact, in the Sheraton in Tbilisi...

There are two things I learned from a July-August ’05 trip to Africa.

1) You MUST have the new U.S. dollars in Africa, especially to pay for your visa at the Kenyan border. We didn’t know this and, had it not been for the gentleman pushing my wheelchair at the Nairobi airport, I doubt we would have gotten in. He argued with the Immigration official for at least 20 minutes to get him to accept our old-style U.S. dollars. They wanted the “big portrait” ones only.

We also saw a...

I saw the reader’s letter “Tips for a London Visit” (Aug. ’06, pg. 19), which mentioned traveling from Heathrow Airport to London on the underground.

The tube may be the cheapest, but unless you’re traveling with only a briefcase, what do you do with your luggage? I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen people who have tried that method and have had to struggle with their luggage down the stairs when they changed lines to get to their hotels.

For the average traveler...

The Benjamin Franklin House opened in London recently. Franklin lived there from 1757 to 1775.

The house has been painstakingly restored and is devoid of furniture. In the basement, which was once the garden, you are treated to a well-researched and -crafted sound-and-video presentation. The Emmy Award winner Peter Coyote is the voice of Franklin, and Imelda Staunton, the 2004 Oscar nominee for “Vera Drake,” is the voice of Franklin’s landlady.

On Dec. 7, 1997, the L.A. Times “Travel” section published a letter of mine entitled “The Price Was Right,” regarding a medical emergency that I experienced in Bilbao, Spain, after eating a bad trout in a restaurant and getting severe food poisoning.

In my letter, I extolled the virtues of socialized medicine for travelers to that country, as the cost to me was $0.00, even though the treatment included a doctor’s house call, ambulance, lab tests, x-rays, EKG and the care of physicians...

The fastest and easiest way to get to Hong Kong and Kowloon from the Hong Kong International Airport is the Airport Express train. There are several options in buying the tickets. After two trips to Hong Kong, Nov. 25-29 (staying at the Shangri-La Kowloon) and Dec. 27-29, ’05 (Holiday Inn on Kowloon), I pretty much figured them all out.

• On the first trip, my husband, John, and I cleared Customs and walked through the automatic doors. Immediately in front of us was a counter, where I...

As I’m a more frequent traveler to London and Dublin these days, and having most recently visited both cities in December ’05-January ’06, I thought I’d pass along some tips and information to my fellow ITN readers. In this letter, I’ll write about London.

After landing at Heathrow Airport, the most inexpensive way to the city is via the underground. If you intend to make more trips on the tube that same day, buy a one-day ticket for zone 6, which gets you into London in about 45...
