Travelers' Intercom

ITN was mailed a copy of the following letter, sent by a reader to Traveler’s Emergency Network (TEN) on Dec. 8.

My husband and I have been members of your organization since February 1998, and we have traveled abroad with more confidence due to our perception that our membership fees ensured we’d have “the best when it comes to travel assistance,” although we never had occasion to utilize your services.

On Nov. 17, 2005, at 7:45 a.m. in Wellington, New Zealand, I called collect to...

While on a Princess cruise from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, we stopped in Falmouth, England, on Sept. 25, ’05. I had confirmed reservations for a rental car from Europcar. However, since this was on a Sunday, I was informed that after I arrived at the agency, I was to call and someone would meet me and provide the keys to the car.

After the agent let us in, I was told that in addition to the £71.08 (near $126) for the car, there would be an additional charge of £...

My wife, Dorothy, and I had been on safari in Africa on two previous occasions. The first was to Kenya and Tanzania, and it remains the best trip we ever experienced — and we have toured all the continents and over 60 countries. Our second was a walking safari through Zimbabwe and Zambia.

We wanted to visit Botswana and Namibia without retracing ground covered on the previous trips. We found what looked to be the perfect match with the safaris offered by Adventures Abroad Worldwide...

For those who fervently believe that “less is more” and “smaller is better,” we recommend Hebridean Island Cruises, Ltd. (Griffin House, Broughton Hall, Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 3AN, England; phone 44 [0] 1756-704704 or visit www.hebridean.co.uk).

This English line operates two ships. We cruised on the Hebridean Princess in 1994, 1998 and 2000 and on the Hebridean Spirit in 2002 and in October ’04. Described best as “floating country house hotels,” they offer the special...

My husband and I took a 23-day trip to Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia in October-November ’05 based on recommendations made by ITN readers.

• We started in Bangkok with the guide Tananchai Sillikasorm (e-mail tans72@hotmail.com), who was recommended by Dan Isenschmid, who answered my “Person to Person” question.

Tananchai was extremely professional, and via e-mail we planned our schedule. He arranged for a van and driver to pick us up in the airport at midnight, take us to the...

I had wanted to visit Yemen for some time. Barbara Wagner of Lost Frontiers (Fairfax, CA; 888/508-2454 or www.lostfrontiers.com) assured me the trip was safe, and I signed up for a December ’04 tour ($3,650 for 21 days).

I found Yemen to be a very exotic and friendly destination. We had a wonderful time traveling from Sana’a to the desert around Wadi Hadhramawt and the Empty Quarter, then to the Red Sea coast and the city of Taizz. We finished with trekking and village/family visits...

I prefer to travel solo, so when Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; 800/221-2610 or www.gct.com) offered their “Classic Costa del Sol” program with no single supplement, I was hooked.

Some say Spain’s Costa del Sol is overdeveloped. I say it is perfect for mature travelers who are looking for an affordable, sunny vacation. For my 2-week trip in December ’04, I stayed in an oceanfront studio in Torremolinos. The kitchenette afforded me a simple but lovely dining experience (the area is...

For a trip to Italy a few years ago, for 17 days we rented an apartment in Ronciglione, an hour’s drive north of Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. There were advantages and disadvantages to having a base and making day trips.

• Advantages — Had we not been stationary, we never would have seen the nearby, tiny, off-the-beaten-track towns, let alone linger in them over coffee watching local life go by, or peered into hardware shops at vegetable seeds and pottery plant holders (which we...
