Prior to our trip to Russia in August ’05, we read about a guide in St. Petersburg named Sveta Motovilovets (phone [812] 275 34 77 or e-mail svetasad@hotmail.com) in ITN (Nov. ’04, pg. 82).

We spent a delightful day with Sveta and her driver. An attractive lady, she speaks excellent English, has a great sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. Sveta knows where to shop, where to eat and how to beat the crowds. With her guidance, we were able to go where tour buses could not go.

My family and I had a wonderful 10-day trip through Spain in June ’05. We fell in love with Seville, where we had a fabulous local guide. Concepcion Delgado (phone 902-158-226 or mobile 616-501-100 or visit www.sevillawalkingtours.com) speaks excellent English and loves sharing her city with others. Anyone with only one day in Seville ought to begin the day with her tour.

She leads a daily 2-hour walking tour of the old part of the city. It starts at the statue in Plaza Nueva at 10:30...

The place that most interested me during our Japan trip was Chiran. Chiran was the site where young men flew on kamikaze flights, and today it is the site of the Chiran Peace Museum.

It was April, and the road in from the entrance of the site was impressively beautiful with azaleas and numerous stone lanterns. After arriving, we went into a large, beautiful park and a museum of photos, memorabilia, two Zero planes and a Kawasaki fighter. The plane looked like one of our P-47s, and it...

After traveling in Laos and southern Thailand on a trip in 2001, I found myself in Bangkok on the first of December awaiting my flight home in a week. The city was decorated with yellow banners and pictures of the King for his birthday on Dec. 5th.

Thinking that there might be some special celebration, that morning I walked from my guest house to the area around the King’s residence. I wandered into a huge auditorium and found myself among 500 well-dressed Thais. Just before a program...

I would like for people to know how nice the airline Grupo TACA is.

I was scheduled to go to San José, Costa Rica, on Sept. 4, ’05, for a couple weeks. I live in Slidell, Louisiana, which was very hard hit by Hurricane Katrina. TACA readily agreed to refund the full amount of my ticket.

In his August ’05 “Discerning Traveler” column, Dr. Philip Wagenaar offered some tips for handling collision damage waivers (CDWs) when renting a car, to which I would like to add some notes. The CDW is a good way to save money, but it has to be watched.

If you decline the CDW when renting a car, you are promising to return the car in the same condition as when you received it. If it is damaged from any cause, whether it is your fault or not, you must pay to fix the damage.

As avid travelers, we have been to over 100 countries. We love to cruise, and there is one thing we have a hard time finding good information about: how to get from the airport to the cruise port in an economical manner.

Since we purchase our own airfare, we do not have this transportation included in our cruise ticket, and we find the fees that the cruise lines charge to be exorbitant! Also, the local taxi companies seem to up the price significantly compared to the standard taxi...

We took a 2-week trip to Malta plus an add-on week in Sicily, April 16-May 6, ’05, with Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; 800/221-2610 or www.gct.com). For my wife and me, the cost was approximately $6,254 from Los Angeles. The experience became a once-in-a-lifetime highlight.

All the credit goes to our Malta program director, Stephen Micallef-Grogan, who led our Grand Circle group of 27 experienced travelers. Stephen, a native of Malta, is fluent in English, Maltese, French and...
