“Knopf Mapguides: The Italian Lakes” (2004, Knopf. ISBN 0375710442 — 48 pp., $8.95).

This is a small book containing but 48 foldout pages, including index pages, and measuring 5"x7".

It has six sections, one for each of the major lakes in northern Italy. Each section includes a brief overview of the specific lake region, offers about six restaurant suggestions and descriptions per region, describes several bars and shopping outlets and, more important to me, has an entry on...

While my wife, Joan, and I were in Thailand in February ’05, our guide told us that as of that month, all Thai banks charge a fee of 33 baht (near 87¢ U.S.) for each travelers’ check cashed, so it’s cheaper to carry 100-dollar checks than 20-dollar checks.

For example, one bank with an exchange rate of 38.29 baht per dollar charged us a fee of 5 x 33 = 165 baht when we cashed five 20-dollar travelers’ checks. That’s a fee of 4.31%. If I had cashed one 100-dollar check instead, the 33-...

• Just once in your life you owe yourself a flight on Singapore Airlines in “Raffles Class.”

We flew round trip from Newark to Singapore in February ’05 on the world’s longest commercial flight. The aircraft, service and food were far, far superior to those of any flight we had previously experienced. After the flight of 18-19 hours, we didn’t want to leave the plane!

As a bonus, this round trip actually circles the world, as you fly east from Newark to Singapore and then east...

1. On Feb. 17, ’05, we went to Gare de Lyon in Paris to activate our multi-country saverpass (seven days, four countries, two people, good for two months) and make seat reservations for travel starting on Feb. 21 to/within/from Italy and Belgium.

FrenchRail (SNCF) said they will not validate passes until the actual day of travel for trains that do not need a seat reservation or until the day you are ready to make a seat reservation for future travel. I told them that we were going to...

For our 50th wedding anniversary in June ’04, my wife and I were each given a $400 gift certificate for Icelandair travel. The gift certificate says that tickets are “to be issued in exchange for any international round trip ticket on Icelandair.” The gift certificate receipts state, “$400 good for air travel on Icelandair to any destination from any of our gateways.”

When we tried to purchase tickets with them on Sept. 23, ’04, we were told that they could not be used for discount...

Early last spring I discovered the company French Country Waterways (Box 2195, Duxbury, MA 02331; phone 800/222-1236 or, in MA, 781/934-2454 or visit www.fcwl.com) while reading the New York Times travel section. Not only did their 6-day canal wine trips sound very appealing but the company was offering a special. It was a discount equal to the number of years of marriage for couples celebrating anniversaries divisible by five. Since my husband, John, and I like wine, were celebrating our...

I loved A.J. Goodhead’s letter on Kenwood House and Golders Green, etc. (Feb. ’05, pg. 81); it could have been written by my husband and me. We go there on every trip to London — not just for the fantastic collection of art, though that is indeed phenomenal, but because the grounds lend themselves to many nice walks (even in the rain!).

The Brew House Café’ is great; we always plan our lunch around that. It is so nice when we can sit on the terrace. (We go April or October, as a rule...

I was one of a group of five relatives who took a tour of Ireland and then drove around Italy in July ’04. Our flights were on Aer Lingus as well as British Air, but to get from Dublin to Venice we had to go through London, with the leg from London’s Heathrow airport to Venice on British Midland Airways.

When we arrived at Heathrow on July 21, an attendant with a wheelchair was waiting for my mother to race her through the line for boarding passes. This was the last we saw of her...
