We enjoyed Randy Keck’s 2-part article “Barging on the Canal du Midi” (Aug. ’15, pg. 55 & Sept. ’15, pg. 55). However, it occurred to us that ITN readers might be interested in another way to experience this masterpiece, one that is less luxurious, more adventuresome and much less expensive.

In 2009, also influenced by the crazy book “Narrow Dog to Carcassonne,” we, along with another couple, rented a canal boat for a 10-day cruise from...

I should have paid more attention to Julie Skurdenis. Appended to her June 2012 “Focus on Archaeology” column, regarding Bogotá’s La Candelaria neighborhood, was a brief narrative of the difficulties she had using her cell phone with a SIM card purchased in Bogotá plus problems using ATM cards there. My cell phone worked fine in Colombia, but I suffered difficulties in obtaining cash.

The day before my wife and I were to depart on our July 2015 trip, it dawned on me...

I read Bruce Berger’s account of his misfortune with the mandatory road-tax stickers that tripped him up in Switzerland and, in a costly manner, in Slovenia (Sept. ’15, pg. 13).

Allow me to point out that a number of countries in Europe, among them Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland (and, soon, Germany), each have independently instituted prepaid road-tax stickers, commonly called vignettes, which are mandatory for travel on fast...

My husband, Mike, and I began our May 17-June 2, 2015, trip to Europe with a visit to Warsaw, Poland, a city we had long wanted to visit because of its history in World War II and the Communist aftermath.

Using the Internet and Rick Steves’ guidebook “Snapshot – Kraków, Warsaw and Gdansk” (2015, Avalon Travel Publishing — $13.99), we planned our 3-night stay at Mamaison Hotel Le Regina Warsaw (Koscielna 12, 00-218 Warsaw, Poland; phone +48 22 531 60 00, www.mamaison.com/warsaw-...

Commanding a spectacular view of Switzerland’s Wetterhorn, the Rosenlaui Glacier and the Gadmen Valley, Hotel Gletscherblick (Urseni, 6085 Hasliberg, Goldern, Switzerland; phone +41 [0] 33 972 40 40, www.gletscherblick.ch) is situated on a bend in the road on the Hasliberg plateau above Meiringen.

My husband, Dick, and I, along with our son Jim and his family, spent a week there in July 2015. For Dick and me, it was our ninth visit to this special place, which I had discovered around...

When my wife, Susan, and I booked a Berlin-Prague cruise for Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2014, with Viking River Cruises (Woodland Hills, CA; 877/668-4546, www.vikingrivercruises.com), we had the company’s air services division, Viking Air, arrange four flights for us, all on Air France in Economy Comfort.

We would fly from Los Angeles to Paris, where we would spend five days on our own, then from Paris to Berlin, staying in a hotel overnight before cruising to Prague and flying home to Los...

In the Feature Article “One Trip, Two Experiences — a Group Tour of Ethiopia vs. a Private, Customized Journey” (July ’15, pg. 6), the writer reported on two trips he and his wife took in Ethiopia.

The first was a group photography tour arranged by National Geographic Expeditions (Washington, DC; 888/966-8687, www.nationalgeographicexpeditions.com), and the second was a private, custom tour arranged for the couple by another operator. After a glowing account of the National Geographic...

Had my wife and I chosen to book a private train and/or group tour for our 15-day trip from Moscow to Beijing, we would have paid more than three times as much as we did. Instead, we chose to travel on public trains and ended up having assistance from travel agents at two of our stops as well as during our first days in Moscow.

We booked our May 11-26, 2013, train trip through a UK travel agency, Real Russia (4-5 Wards End, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England, LE11 3HA, U.K.; phone...
