THIS OLD (really, really old) HOUSE — July’s picture shows the 5,000-year-old remains of Skara Brae, a Neolithic village near Kirkwall on Pomona Island, one of the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Those Stone Age designers all must have subscribed to the same version of Architectural Digest, because some of our readers were sure they’d seen these ruins in France, on Easter Island, in French Polynesia or in Troy!

May’s photo depicted the chapel in the penal colony on Devil’s Island, one of the three islands of the Îles du Salut (Safety Islands) in the Atlantic off the north coast of French Guiana.

The Parliament Palace in Bucharest, Romania

Quite a few of the 136 readers who correctly identified March’s picture didn’t particularly admire the building, the Parliament Palace in Bucharest, Romania. It was built by dictator Nicolai Ceausescu as the “Casa Poporului” and “Victory of Socialism Center” in the 1980s and was unfinished at the time of his death.

“So ugly, and such a tragedy for Romania,” said Mrs. Don Adamson of Altadena, CA. Jean Rudolph of Moscow, ID, labeled it a “monstrosity.”

“Ugly,” opined Robert Brockman of San Antonio, TX, while Katya Davis of Eugene, OR, had a brighter outlook: “It looks better at night when it is lit up.”

The sculpture, “Object” by David Cerny, is suspended in the Lucerne Passage off Wenceslas Square in Prague, Czech Republic. (Readers who had seen the sculpture outside the passage prior to its installation were counted as having right answers.)
