Calling All Readers

We asked any of you who attended a concert, a recital or any music or dance performance or stage production outside of the US in the last couple of years to tell us how you learned about it and how you obtained tickets. To that end, we requested the following of you.

State what you went to see, where it was (country, city and, if known, the venue) and approximately when you were there. Tell us how you learned about the event (from a website? newspaper? street flier?) and how you...

Richard Lowe of Pahrump, Nevada, wrote, “When traveling, I troll markets and flea markets looking for things I can’t find in the USA, mainly antiques, art (especially prints and posters), knicknacks and small, tasteful furniture. I am especially drawn to pottery and vases.

“The flea markets in Europe are pretty well known, but I’d like to see which out-of-the way markets readers can tell us about, even on other continents. Travelers who respond should indicate...

A subscriber asked readers for suggestions regarding appropriate amounts to tip wheelchair attendants in airports. Responses are shown below.

My wife and I are relentless travelers and, lately, due to arthritic problems, she has to use a wheelchair to cover any real distance. In May 2010 our flights involved multiple legs (mostly due to our using air miles to travel business class and, therefore, being unable to get nonstops, since business-class seats available for mileage...

In the course of your travels, what work of art took you by surprise in that it affected you deeply in some way? Which one lingered in your memory for some reason or made you long to see it again? We printed responses to those questions last month and show a few more below.

When my wife and I were at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra, Jordan, in September ’10, we were told that we should try the ice cream at the hotel Mövenpick Resort Petra, (Box 214, 71810, Petra, Jordan; phone +962 3 215 71 11), located just outside the site.

The first day we toured Petra, we must have walked miles, including the 900 steps to visit the Monastery, one of the main attractions. Tired, sweaty and covered in Petra’s red dust, we started limping home. As luck would...

On a tour of South Africa with Big Five Tours & Expeditions (Stuart, FL; 800/244-3483) in February ’08, we stopped at Boulders Beach on False Bay to see hundreds of African penguins. Smaller than most penguin species, they are very attractive, with distinctive black polka dots on their tummies. The wooden walkways over the beach allowed us to get very close to the penguins.

Barbara Glavish of Incline Village, Nevada, wrote, “Many readers have mentioned that they travel all over the world with just one carry-on bag. I do wonder how they cope with the rule prohibiting carrying greater-than-three-ounce containers of liquids, gels and pastes.* Do they carry lots of little bottles of body lotion, shampoo, face cream, toothpaste, etc? Do they purchase toiletry items on the go? I’ve found that in many places, even generic-type lotions, shampoos, etc., are much more...
