In Pakistan, at least 74 people were killed on Oct. 31 when a fire broke out on a passenger train traveling from Karachi, in the south, to Rawalpindi, in the far north. An additional 40 people were injured. Officials reported that at least some passengers were killed when they jumped from the burning carriages while the train was still in motion.

Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan on Oct. 12 with sustained winds of up to 140 miles per hour. At least 40 people were killed, with more still missing at press time.

The storm was the worst to hit the country in 40 years, causing widespread damage and flooding in south-central Japan. Up to 7 million people were forced to evacuate their homes during the storm. Tokyo was also hit but experienced little damage thanks to flood-control systems.

An earthquake measuring 6.4 in magnitude occurred in the central part of the island of Mindanao, southern Philippines, on Oct. 16, killing two people and injuring many others. Many buildings were damaged, including a shopping center in General Santos City that was destroyed by fire, and thousands of people were left without power. The earthquake was centered 45 miles south of the regional capital, Davao.

Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas on Sept. 1 with sustained winds of over 100 miles per hour and gusts up to 185. Due to atmospheric conditions, the hurricane remained over the Bahamas for more than 48 hours. At least 53 people were killed, but more than 1,300 people remained missing as of press time and were assumed dead. Multiple communities were destroyed, mostly on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island, leaving thousands homeless.

Monsoon season in India typically lasts from June through September. Rainfall usually is on the decline in September, leading local officials to describe these floods as “completely unexpected.”

An earthquake measuring 5.8 in magnitude occurred in eastern Pakistan on Sept. 24, killing at least 37 people and injuring more than 500.
