Joanne Kuzma (front center) and group canyoning in Slovenia.

For a variety of water-based activities, I took a trip to Slovenia, Aug. 12-19, 2012, with Exodus (In the US, contact Adventure Center, Emeryville, CA; 800/843-4272).

Our group of 16 flew from London Luton Airport to Ljubljana via Adria Airways. We did not arrive until midnight, then had a 2-hour drive to the Guesthouse Jazbec. With lovely rooms, this was a nice little guest house about a mile outside Kobarid.

On Monday, our first activity was “tubing” down the Soča River. I...

During a month in Africa with friends (June-July 2012), I boarded a fast boat from Entebbe, Uganda ($129 round trip), for a 45-minute ride to Ngamba Island, which houses the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary (phone +256 414 320 662). At the time of my visit, the sanctuary provided care for 48 orphaned chimps that had come from families, circuses and even a US military base.

Entry costs $40 per person, and it costs $200 a day for room and meals. In addition, one can sign on as a caregiver...

I took my children and grandchildren, 10 of us, total, to China, June 18-30, 2012. T.E.I. Tours & Travel (Pleasant Hill, CA; 925/825-6104) made all the travel and hotel arrangements for us except for the international flights, and we were extremely happy with their services.

We paid a land price of $2,195 per person, which included two nights in Shanghai, a 4-night Yangtze River cruise, two nights in Chongqing and three in Beijing. Internal airfares added $545 each. (The group...

Approaching the monastic settlement at Glendalough, we came upon this cemetery.

From a vacation my wife, Paula, and I and another couple took in the Republic of Ireland, June 14-25, 2012 (Dec. ’12, pg. 14), I have a few attractions and impressions to share.

We feel that, in Dublin, the Chester Beatty Library (Dublin Castle, Dublin 2; phone+[353 1] 407 0750 — Open 10-5 Tuesday-Friday, 11-5 Saturday, 1-5 Sunday and closed Mondays. Free admission) is underrated. If you’re interested in early Islamic, Asian and Christian manuscripts and art, this is a “must see.”...

My wife, DarIene, and I, and our daughter and son-in-law took the 10-day “Guyana, Suriname & Trinidad” tour from Adventures Abroad (Blaine, WA; 800/665-3998). There were 17 of us on the Feb. 22-March 2, 2012, trip, the first that the company had run there in four years (they won’t run a trip if fewer than eight people sign up).

This trip was not cheap. Including air from Austin, we paid $4,560 each, which came to about $450 a day.

We began in Georgetown, the capital of...

During a trip to West Africa in June ’12, I spent 11 days in Senegal. In Dakar, I was fortunate to use the guide services of Massaer Dieng (e-mail dieng.massaer@yahoo.fr), who goes by “Ali.” He is knowledgeable, experienced, very personable and speaks English well. I used him for six days during my stay and was very happy with the experience.

Ali works with his friend Abdou, who is an excellent, experienced and friendly driver. (“Friendly” is not unusual in Senegal, I found.) Abdou...

My wife, Jan, and I and our 12-year-old granddaughter, Paige, traveled independently in Scandinavia for a month in summer 2012. We made advance reservations in only three cities (Oslo, Göteborg and Bergen), where accommodations were reported to be tight and expensive.

Otherwise, wherever we found ourselves in mid afternoon, we sought out a B&B, farmstay or camping cabin that offered linens, or occasionally a smaller hotel. Local chambers of commerce, our trusty iPad and a GPS...

My two daughters and I stayed in three hotels in September-October ’11. (All prices given are current as of September ’12.)

• In Rome, Hotel Papa Germano (Via Calatafimi 14/a, 00185 Rome, Italy; phone +39 0648 6919, fax 0647 825202) is a 5-minute walk straight down from Termini train station. The rate for a triple room is €110 (near $143).

The room was small but clean, with a bathroom. The included breakfast was really good — more than just coffee and a roll. Internet access...
