CLARIFICATION — Regarding the article on Zambia in the April ’11 issue, subscriber Christopher Hartley of Ormond Beach, Florida, wrote, “I enjoyed reading about Ms. Schumacher’s visit to Zambia and Vic Falls. I would, however, raise a question about her statement, ‘Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world’.”

Yes, that statement should have been qualified. Victoria Falls is not the tallest waterfall, but, when considering its height and width, it is the largest sheet of...

When packing, always put shoes in shoe bags. I make my own shoe bags from soft fabric, such as a thin flannel, as the plastic ones do not pack as well. Wipe off shoes, when needed, with wet wads of toilet paper, then dry them with additional sheets of the paper.

For a long trip, carry mothballs in small cloth bags, especially in damp climates, to get rid of mustiness. I usually use them in my shoes. Put them into zip-lock bags until you’re ready to bring them out. Use them, then pitch...

My husband, Tom, and I are in our eighties and, while it’s true that people drive fast in Italy, we had no problems driving there in September 2010. My husband is 86 and did most of the driving in Italy, though I did some.

In 2005 we spent three weeks in New Zealand, and we can’t understand why we’ve read no complaints about driving there. As in the US, there are broken painted lines to indicate that one can pass, but in New Zealand these lines are on curves and over crests of hills...

The museum room at the Manila Hotel.

On a trip to the Philippines in late October 2010, my husband, John, and I stayed at the Manila Hotel for four nights. We stayed in the old hotel, opened in 1912 and full of history, and the whole experience was wonderful. A string ensemble played nightly in the lobby. It’s connected to a more modern tower hotel, but we loved the older charm, elevator, etc. Our room, with beautiful mahogany doors and woodwork, had two small balconies and faced the street and a park. It was difficult to...

My husband, Bob, and I took the trip of a lifetime around the world, November 2010-January 2011, by combining two Oceania Cruises voyages. Here are a few helpful hints for others who’d like to circumnavigate the globe.

We found that most of the world accepts US currency. Take lots of one-dollar bills and other small denominations. Bargain; most of the world does.

English truly is spoken — at least a little bit — almost everywhere.

Hiring a taxi is generally a great way...

Articles my husband, R.C., and I read in ITN helped us plan our fall ’09 trip to Croatia and Slovenia. We went to Plitvice National Park because every article we’d read about Croatia mentioned this destination. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen another place quite like it. The color of the lakes is so special, black-and-white photos cannot do it justice. We spent an entire day walking the park’s paths.

We also read Yvonne Michie Horn’s article “The Adriatic Coast” (Feb. ’09, pg. 6),...

Prior to traveling to Mongolia and China with Overseas Adventure Travel in July ’10, I was advised by friends who had taken the China portion of the trip the previous year that their doctor recommended taking a chewable Pepto-Bismol tablet with every meal when traveling. The doctor suggested that this reduces the likelihood that bacteria will be absorbed in the digestive tract.

My friends followed this advice and were the only people in their group NOT to have some kind of sickness...

Bartering may be viewed as an unpleasant chore, but the exchange offers the opportunity to connect with local people. I have experience at bargaining in India, South America and numerous Southeast Asian countries, but traditions differ in other parts of the world. I have haggled successfully using the following advice.

• Know what you want. When I arrive at a destination, I observe local products, study prevailing prices, compare quality and listen to what others have paid.

•...
