Hotel Amstel

On a cruise through Holland and Belgium in spring 2005, we saw a number of canals, including this one in Edam. We sailed round trip from Amsterdam, and one highlight came at the end of the 10-day cruise as we drove through the tulip fields of Holland to visit Keukenhof Gardens, near Lisse. We had a last day in Amsterdam and I arranged to have lunch (served Monday-Friday) at the famous hotel Amstel (Professor Tulpplein 1). I knew this gracious hotel from past visits, and a lunch at their 2-...

To mesh with a Greek Isles cruise in September ’07, I spent months on the Internet looking for an open-jaw airfare from San Diego to Istanbul with return from Athens to San Diego.

I would like to highly recommend Vayama (www.vayama.com) for booking international flights. Through this site I found the best price: $929 + $119.61 tax + $10 fee for a total of $1,058.61. It was on Delta Airlines and there was one stop in each direction. It was my first experience using this site.

I read with interest the reader’s letter “Rented Car Online for Heathrow” (Aug. ’07, pg. 28), specifically the part regarding the auto rental company’s requirement that he show proof, from his credit card company, of CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) coverage.

I have often used the Internet to check on U.K. car rental prices and I have subsequently followed this with a telephone call directly to the U.K. company. This is helpful for two reasons: 1) the U.K. agent will make it quite clear...

Bella Roma! I am a college professor, and together with a colleague we escorted 21 students through Rome’s classical treasures in May ’07. On my final night, as I packed, I watched a spaghetti Western on the hotel TV. It got me thinking about “the good, the bad and the ugly” of our trip.

The good — Rome is vast, multilayered and wonderful. Much of it is free: the Basilica of St. Peter’s, the Forum, the fountains, the Pantheon and the hundreds of churches. There is little that...

While my husband and I were in Beijing for three days during a 2-week trip to China, April 15-29, 2007, I wanted to take a tour of the hutongs.

Hutongs are the alleys that are lined with multitudes of small homes. They covered the city for centuries, but since the founding of the People’s Republic of China and most particularly since the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), hutongs have been destroyed and replaced by other buildings, Tiananmen Square, etc. Many hutongs remain, in pockets...

My husband and I flew on Continental Airlines July 15, 2007, from San Francisco to Newark to Copenhagen to board the Crystal Symphony for a cruise around the Baltic Sea.

Much to our surprise, the food on the flight was terrific in business/first class. The dinner began with seafood, including a lovely lobster bisque demitasse with a whole lobster claw! The meal continued to surprise and delight.

Coming home from Stockholm to Newark to San Francisco on Aug. 1 was a similar...

I was part of a group of eight Americans scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia, Oct. 22-Nov. 2, 2006, under the auspices of Advantage Travel & Tours. I was the only member of our tour group whose visa was denied. I also was the only member of the group who was Jewish and so indicated on the visa application form question asking us to list our religion.

My travel agent had assured me that the “official policy” of the Saudi government is they do not discriminate on the basis of religion...

For our 50th anniversary, in August ’06 my wife and I left for Europe on a 2-month trip. We utilized a travel agency in Colorado for airline, train and hotel bookings. Our drive in a rental car through France would end at Strasbourg, after which we would take an Adriatic cruise.

The ship would depart its pier in Venice, Italy, at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20. To make that, we had been booked on Lufthansa flight No. 6911 from Strasbourg to Frankfurt, Germany, on that same day, connecting with...
