On my trip to Paris in October ’06, I didn’t decide which day to go to Mont-Saint-Michel until I got to France. I decided to book my visit at the office of Paris Vision (214 rue de Rivoli; phone +33 1 42 60 30 01, fax +33 1 42 86 95 36 or visit www.parisvision.com).

The itinerary, at 155 (near $200), included a 7:15 a.m. departure, a multilingual guide, lunch on the Mont at one of the La Mère Poulard places, admission to the abbey, and the return to Paris by 8:30-9 p.m. We had heavy...

Kraków, Poland, is a small city. The Old Town — encompassing the town square, the old city walls, the opera house, museums and churches — is less than a square kilometer. The castle, called the Wawel, is a kilometer from the town square. Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, is a 15-minute walk beyond the castle.

Old Town’s town square has a lovely market square built in the Middle Ages. In its center is the Cloth Hall, a long, Renaissance-period building which today houses crafts and...

Although my wife, Paula, and I have traveled extensively, we prefer using public transit during our trips, allowing us to avoid the stress of driving in strange locales and the hassle of parking in cities. Slovenia, however, is best toured by car, since most of its attractions are not easy to get to by rail or bus.

So for our October ’05 trip to Slovenia (Feb. ’07, pg. 72) we rented a Lancia Musa from Hertz (800/654-3001 or visit www.hertz.com). A week’s rental with unlimited mileage...

After reading in ITN (March ’04, pg. 17) only praises about Samir Fayek (cell phone 011 20 12 399 5147 or e-mail samirfayek@hotmail.com), I decided to contact him for my Egypt trip in January-February ’06. I would have some free time in Cairo on two occasions and needed suggestions on where to stay and what to do.

He answered my e-mail right away, and when I got to Cairo he came to see me and we planned a few trips. A great 3-day tour to Luxor was especially well planned. I went by...

I feel I have to respond to two letters, one dissing an airline (Oct. ’06, pg. 31) and one a cruise line (Dec. ’06, pg. 29).

• Although EgyptAir’s (800/334-6787, www.egyptair.com) business class isn’t exactly state of the art, it’s very cheap.

We flew it in November ’06, and we were preboarded and given preference through both security checks, going and coming home. The usual sequence is every coach passenger boards, then they come get you out of the VIP lounge and you are...

CORRECTION — In the February ’07 “The Cruising World” column is a photo captioned “The famous armored cruiser Potemkin, moored at St. Petersburg.”

I’ve visited St. Petersburg twice and have seen the venerable warship moored on the Nevka, near the Peter and Paul Fortress, but the ship’s name is Aurora. I checked the Lonely Planet City Guide “St. Petersburg,” first edition, by Nick Selby, which I took with me on my first trip, and on page 211 it confirms this.

In that same...

Above, a cloudless sapphire sky seemed to stretch endlessly over the space at the top of the world.

April is the time to travel to the North Pole. In April, there’s no sunrise or sunset and the ice is thick enough for a Twin Otter plane (equipped with skis) to land.

Many have flown over the North Pole, approached it by icebreaker or passed under it by submarine, but I flew with six travelers and two pilots to this isolated region with the intention of hiking from our plane and...

In the following, I haven’t identified the hotel or hotel chain because it’s not my purpose to single them out for criticism (the hotel staff was very accommodating).

In May ’06, I needed to reserve a hotel room in Buenos Aires for mid-December. I chose a hotel that is part of an international chain, then located that hotel’s website, where I found a nightly rate of $130.

I was unsure whether I had made the online reservation successfully, however, so I sent an e-mail message...
