Travelers' Intercom

My significant other, Abram Engelman, and I traveled to Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova, May 22-June 15, 2017, on a trip arranged by Original World. The itinerary was good, our guides were excellent, and most of the accommodations were very good as well.

When we arrived in Sofia, Bulgaria, however, there was nobody at the airport to meet us. We waited about 45 minutes, then I called the tour’s local representative, Andrei Nicolau, whose first response was, “I thought you...

Icelandair (www.icelandair.us) recently canceled its summer morning flights from Reykjavik, Iceland, to New York City and bumped people with bookings to the 5 p.m. flight, which arrives at JFK Airport at 7 p.m.

Not me! When I called, on Jan. 30, to ask why I had been bumped, protesting the later arrival, I was told they would refund the full fare for my June 22, 2018, flight (a stopover while heading back from Scotland) but that it would take four to six weeks. I received an...

During the 4-week “5 Stans Tour” that my husband, Bob, and I took with Jeff Garrett of JMG Tibet Tours (Lauderhill, FL; 866/548-4238, www.jmgtibettours.com), April 10-May 7, 2017, we visited a part of the world I knew almost nothing about.

The five countries — Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan — all were different, and we enjoyed them all. We met very few English-speaking tourists and only one other English-speaking tour group....

My husband, Gerald Liedl, and I took a 6-day safari in Namibia, “Dunes & Wildlife,” in March 2017. We booked it online through The Cardboard Box Travel Shop (15 Bismarck St., Windhoek, Namibia; phone +264 61 256580, www.namibian.org).

The cost of the safari, which was limited to 12 travelers, was $990 each and included everything but one dinner and bottles of water.* Because the drives were long, on three days we had box lunches to save time.

We were...

My husband, Michael, wanted a sport utility vehicle (SUV). I’d managed to postpone it for years, but when our faithful, 15-year-old Volvo convertible that we’d picked up at the Volvo factory in Göteborg, Sweden, had repair costs (to pass inspection) higher than she was worth, we knew it was time. And luck was with us. Volvo still had the Overseas Delivery program.

We met with the sales consultant Sandy Mason-Bealer at a local Volvo dealership, Wynn Volvo Cars Norristown (...

Here are some ideas I’ve used for avoiding jet lag.

• Beware of long eastbound flights, especially overnight flights. They are the worst.

• If you can afford it, fly business class to be better rested.

• For eastbound transatlantic travel, I always check out the Queen Mary 2 to see if it fits our schedule. If you take an inside cabin, the fare is only a little more than economy air (and a lot less than business). You miss the jet lag and get seven...

I read, in the Travel Brief “Delta Bag-check Fee” (Feb. ’18, pg. 4), that on flights to/from Europe and North Africa, Delta Air Lines and partners will soon start charging each Basic Economy passenger a $60 fee for the first checked bag.

I’ve noticed that, as it is, no one checks the hand baggage at the airline gates. I’ve watched a couple board a plane with two 24-inch suitcases or boxes and take up one-and-a-half overhead luggage areas. I’ve...

Following a May 2017 visit to Russia (Jan. ’18, pg. 6), we flew airBaltic (www.airbaltic.com) from St. Petersburg to Stockholm, Sweden.

From Stockholm Arlanda Airport, we rode the Arlanda Express train to Stockholm Central Station, then took a taxi to our hotel. Booking the Arlanda Express early provides big savings.

We spent two days in the center of Stockholm, an extremely expensive city. Our room in the 3-star NOFO Hotel & Wine Bar (Tjarhovsgatan 11,...
