The Appalachian Mountain Club’s “Bolivian Day Hiking Adventure” promised hiking and discovery in a country I’ve always wanted to visit. I arrived in La Paz, Bolivia (via Miami from Houston), on Jan. 23, 2017, but the official tour started on the evening of Jan. 25 and ended early on Feb. 6.

We were led by Ginette Beaudoin and Anna Panszcyk of Appalachian Mountain Club, or AMC (Boston, MA; 617/523-0655, ginetteandanna amctrips.weebly.com), and Matt Butler of...

My husband and I were in China for 2½ weeks, Oct. 10-28, 2016. We visited Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an and Lhasa and went on a Yangtze River cruise.

Upon the recommendation of an ITN reader, I used China Travel Service (San Francisco, CA; 800/899-8618, www.chinatravelservice.com) to help plan and arrange the trip. I began working with them about 10 months before our trip.

The company is headquartered in Hong Kong but has offices throughout China and, indeed, the world...

My wife, Marcia, and I finally made it to Victoria Falls in March 2017, and we weren’t disappointed. In fact, our visit there was downright spectacular. A major contributor to our enjoyment was the Zimbabwean guide Moses Ndhlovu (phone +263 777 835 960 or email mosndhlovu@yahoo.com).

Our hotel, the Bayete Guest Lodge (Stand 584, Manyika Rd., Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe), put us in touch with Moses, and he came by the day before our tour to finalize arrangements. The next morning,...

Several months before a Celebrity Infinity cruise that would stop in the Falkland Islands, I wrote to the Falkland Islands Tourist Board (www.falklandislands.com) asking for a recommendation of a tour guide who was knowledgeable about birds. They recommended Brian Summers (summerwalks@horizon.co.fk), a local bird expert.I contacted Brian, and he quickly responded and agreed to take us to places where we were most likely to see penguins and other birds. Brian is a third-generation Falkland...

I went to an exhibit in Pforzheim, Germany, called Rome 312 (Hohweisenweg 6, Pforzheim; phone +49 7231 7760 997, www.gasometer-pforzheim.de/en) in March 2017.The exhibit is a 4-story panorama of Rome, Italy, as it looked during the time of Emperor Constantine. It’s done in the round, and you really feel like you’re there. It’s housed in a repurposed gasholder, circa 1912. The exhibit is fully accessible. If you’re in the area, it’s well worth a stop. There...

My husband and a friend and I spent a week at a resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, March 2-9, 2017. Although we usually cooked for ourselves in our villa, we sometimes caught ourselves in town at lunchtime.

One day, we decided to eat at a new restaurant we had spotted, Añejo Limon Restaurante (Calle Basilio Badillo 229, Puerto Vallarta; phone +52 322 222 1110, anejolimon@gmail.com). It looked like it was open, so we went in.

It turned out the owner had planned to open that day...

Returning from Morocco with family members in October 2016 (March ’17, pg. 14), we stopped over for three nights in Madrid, Spain, where, in addition to seeing the usual tourist attractions, I looked forward to having paella (a dish of rice, meat and vegetables) at least once and returning to what the Guinness Book of World Records considers the world’s oldest continually operating restaurant, Restaurante Botín (C/Cuchilleros, 17, 28005, Madrid, Spain; phone +34 913 664...

In the Santa Lucia train station in Venice, Italy, be sure to visit the gelato counter GROM (www.grom.it). It’s dead ahead of you when you walk up the ramp on the left and through the station door.Even though I hardly ever drink coffee, that flavor of GROM’s gelato was wonderfully “espresso” tasting. I also enjoyed the darker chocolates and the fruit flavors, all of them seasonally fresh. One scoop (media) cost €3.20 (near $3.50), two scoops (grande) cost €3....
