Emily and Al Moore enjoying the view from Allmendhubel, a hill above Mürren.

To celebrate my husband, Al’s, recovery from a near-fatal illness, we decided to return to Switzerland, our very favorite country, Aug. 4-19, 2015. However, we got off to a rough (and very sad) start on our departure day when we had to say a final ‘Good-bye’ to our beloved 16-year-old cat, Alexander. We buried him in our backyard and left a few hours later to begin our travel to Switzerland.

Because we were using frequent-flyer miles, our itinerary was not the best...

Cerro Negro, an active volcano outside of León, Nicaragua, is one of the only places in the world where an adventure-junkie can volcano board on a wooden sled at speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour.

My wife and I set up our September 2016 Nicaragua trip, ourselves. First we went to Tamarindo Beach, Costa Rica, for a half-marathon and zip-line tours. Then we took a bus to Granada, where we stayed with friends.

I’m a global adventure junkie and look for things to do that I...

If you appreciate wine, especially fine wine, visiting France’s Bordeaux region is likely one of your travel aspirations. In recent years, however, the city of Bordeaux, itself, has been rejuvenated into an appealing destination. The town’s finest attraction, opened in June 2016, is the remarkable La Cité du Vin.

My wife, Paula Owens, and I visited this institution (“museum” is too limiting) on Nov. 25, 2016, at the end of a river cruise with Viking Cruises....

Early in my life, I learned how much fun it is to travel. I’ve decided that a love for travel must be a genetic condition; my mom and dad both loved to travel. When I was a child, our family took summer vacations by automobile (before the interstate system), and by the time I was a teenager I had been in all of the lower 48 states.I first had the opportunity to travel outside of the United States when, as an 18-year-old ROTC midshipman, I spent six weeks on the USS Macon sailing from...

Nearing the end of a 50-day African holiday, my husband, Roger, and I arrived at Ruaha National Park in Tanzania on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016.

From the airstrip, we had a wonderful game drive on the way to the Ruaha River Lodge (www.ruahariverlodge.com), seeing a lot of mammals and birds. When we turned into the drive taking us to the lodge, we were greeted by a bull elephant and had to wait for him to get out of the way.

We spent the next two days on game drives and...

I flew from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Los Angeles in business class on Qatar Airways in February 2016, purchasing the flight with American Airlines miles. I just had to write about it.For sleeping, the seat on the Qatar flight reclined flat. The attendants provided both a mattress pad and a sparkling-white sheet along with two spotless and very comfortable pillows in cotton cases and a quilt wrapped in a white duvet. The cabin staff made up my bed, and after I had eight hours of sound sleep...

My husband, Gerald Liedl, and I made a trip to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Oct. 5-15, 2016, with Kutrubes Travel (Boston, MA; 800/878-8566, www.kutrubestravel.com). For our private tour, we each paid $2,999 (plus airfare, which we arranged, ourselves, through United). The cost covered a car, driver and guide throughout, as well as hotels, all meals, transfers, entrance fees and even bottled water each day.Food was abundant and tasty and served family-style, so we could eat as much...

I booked “Sunny Portugal” through AAA Vacations (800/922-8228, ww1.aaa.com); the 10-day tour was run by Collette (Pawtucket, RI; 800/340-5158, www.gocollette.com). Its cost, including air, single supplement, insurance and optionals, came to $3,854.

Flying TAP Portugal, I left Miami, Florida, for Lisbon on Nov. 11, 2016. The service on the flight was very good.

The tour provided a kaleidoscope of fond memories.

We drove through sleepy villages with...
