Travelers' Intercom

My family and I attended a wedding in Marrakech, Morocco, in October 2016. A few weeks before leaving, I found a private tour guide, Kharroubi Youssef (y.kharroubi@yahoo.com), through TripAdvisor.com. After reading the reviews, I contacted him through TripAdvisor. Each time I contacted him, he emailed me back immediately.

In Marrakech, we visited various sites with Youssef on our 6-hour tour, half of which was by van. In the afternoon, we walked with him through the Medina, a...

An organized tour that my wife, Annaloy, and I would take in Belize did not include the Caracol ruins, so, in February 2016, before joining the group tour, we took an independent tour in San Ignacio that turned out to be excellent.

To make arrangements, we contacted Albert Williams (albert@bzmtours.com) at Belize Magnificent Mayan (BZM) Tours (#16B, San José Succotz, Cayo District, Belize; phone, in US/Canada, 315/351-0720, bzmtours.com).

In the letter titled “VPN-location reminder” (Dec. ’16, pg. 12), Jim Royle makes a good point when he advises readers to each tell their bank and credit-card providers where they’re going so that their transactions, communications and log-in attempts from abroad won’t be refused by their bank’s security apparatus due to “unusual activity.”He goes on to say that those of us who use a VPN (virtual personal network), which provides Internet access...

After reading the “Discerning Traveler” column about hospital conditions and treatments in Naples, Italy (Sept. ’16, pg. 51), I felt I should report on a very positive experience that my wife, Mary, and I had at the public hospital in Puglia, Italy. On Sept. 27, 2016, we were staying at a hotel in the village of Bosco, a few miles outside of Perugia. In the middle of the night on our first night there, Mary tripped on the bedspread, which had fallen off the bed while she was...

Having read the travelers’ upsetting trip-insurance experiences in the July and August 2016 issues, I wanted to share one that was positive. In 2011, my wife, Mary, and I signed up with Grand Circle Travel (Boston, MA; 800/221-2610, www.gct.com) for a 2012 trip to Russia plus an extension to the Baltic countries, 20 days total. We had never purchased insurance before because we never get sick, but this time, with the trip a year away, we purchased trip-cancellation and medical insurance...

While planning a trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, I read Nylah Chilton’s letter about visiting that city for two days with Viking Ocean Cruises and not needing a Russian visa so long as she was on the cruise-tour operator’s organized shore excursions (July ’16, pg. 46). However, my wife and I decided to use a different approach, traveling to St. Petersburg independently by ferry from Helsinki, Finland, and taking advantage of Russia’s 72-hour visa-free rule.We...

Plaza de las Flores in Cuenca. Photos by Stephen O. Addison, Jr.

Cuenca, Ecuador’s third-largest city, is often called Ecuador’s most beautiful town, and its historic center has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. This colonial city has become home to many American expat retirees, as well.

Cuenca is located in Ecuador’s southern highlands (elev., 8,200 feet), about an hour by air or eight hours by bus south of the capital, Quito. My wife, Paula Owens, and I chose the easy itinerary and flew between Quito...
