The South Caucasus and Central Asia are not common tourist destinations, even though the area has been traversed by many conquerors and is along the old Silk Road. Whenever friends of ours heard about the “Caspian Odyssey” tour that we were planning to take there aboard the Golden Eagle, a private luxury train, their first question inevitably was, “Where is that?” The answer required a good map. Answering their second question — “Is it safe?”...

My wife, Nancy, and I took the “Egypt & the Nile Tour with Jordan Extension,” Jan.12-29, 2016, with Go Ahead Tours (Cambridge, MA; 800/597-0350, www.goaheadtours.com). The cost for each of us was $4,500, which included airfare from Kansas City to Cairo via Zürich, with the return by way of Amman, Jordan. There were 24 people in our group during the Egyptian part of our tour, and 10 took part in the Jordan extension. Our Egyptian tour director, Amr, an Egyptologist, not only...

For two days of sightseeing in St. Petersburg, Russia, in September 2015 before I started a cruise to Moscow, I used Dancing Bear Tours (Prospekt Kosmonavtov 15A-6H, St. Petersburg, Russia 196211; phone +7 812 379 26 33, https://dancing-bear-tours.com), which advertises in ITN’s Mart. I had contacted the owner of the company, Julia Ivanushkina, when I received my Russian visa, three months before my trip. Julia picked me up at the airport and drove me to the ship. The plans we had...

There were four of us who wanted to take several taxi trips in Athens, Greece, over three days in mid-October 2015 before heading to our ship to embark on a cruise. The taxi service we hired was John’s Yellow Cab (phone +30 694 447 5706, www.athens-taxi.net). When we arrived at the airport, John Grivogiannis met us with a sign showing our name and we were driven into town, a service for which he charged €45 (near $49). Since the fixed fare for standard taxis from the airport to...

The theme of 2015’s world’s fair and exposition, Expo Milano 2015, held May 1-Oct. 31 in northern Italy, was “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” (Dec. ’14, pg. 14). My wife, Ging, and I visited in June, and it provided a taste of what people may experience at the next expos, in Kazakhstan in 2017 and in Dubai in 2020.

The Milano expo had 147 nations represented and some 10 major theme areas spread over 500 acres. The major pavilions and key areas were...

I spent four nights in Tokyo in July 2015 on my annual world trip. After collecting my checked bag from the carousel at Narita International Airport, I walked into the lobby, where there are signs for different types of transportation. I wanted the Friendly Bus (yes, that’s its name).

A ticket for a ride into the city cost $40. The bus departs almost every hour from just outside the airport lobby. It’s very well marked, and there are people who speak a bit of English...

The most memorable cemetery I have visited is not for humans but for monkeys. It is located within the confines of the Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, near the city of Techiman in central Ghana. I visited it in January 2014 as part of a tour with Spiekermann Travel (Eastpointe, MI; 800/645-3233, http://mideasttrvl.com).

The villagers who live in the reserve regard the protected mona and colobus monkeys as reincarnations of their ancestors and revere them as protective spirits. ...

My wife and I took two day tours worth recommending.

• While in Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 10, 2015, prior to a cruise on the Golden Princess, we (along with four friends) took a 7-hour trip to the Healesville Sanctuary (www.zoo.org.au/healesville) in the Yarra Valley.

At the sanctuary, we saw animals and birds native to Australia. Included in the tour was a ride on the Puffing Billy steam train. Two 1912 locomotives pulled a 20-car train on the 25-minute ride. The...
