Travelers' Intercom

Having returned from my December 2015 independent trip to Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), my eyes are still glowing and my mouth is still agape from the marvelous sights, both modern and ancient.

• OMAN is the more conservative of the two countries. Observing customs, traditions and everyday life there was an eye-opening treat.

Its capital, Muscat, is a beautiful city caught in a narrow strip between mountains and sea. Its three main areas — Ruwi, Mutrah...

On Paris’ Îsle de la Cité, the specialty is seasonal vegetables at the bistro Mon Vieil Ami (69 rue Saint-Louis en l’Ile, Paris, France; phone +33 1 40 46 01 35, http://en.mon-vieil-ami.com).

My daughter, Linda, and I had saved the bistro for a splurge on our last day in Paris in early May 2015. What a perfect choice it was — simple but sophisticated, small and cozy, with only a few tables (so do make a reservation). Luckily, for us, the sweet table for two beside a...

As a nonagenarian, here is my advice to photographers.

Edit your collection while your eyes are still good and before your equipment and software go out of date. Put the photos on the most modern medium.

I waited too long to organize my photographs. The dates have faded beyond recognition, and I can’t read my own writing on the file guides.

I have glaucoma and AMD [Age-related Macular Degeneration]. While magnifiers compensate for poor acuity, nothing can be done...

Based upon another ITN subscriber’s recommendation (Sept. ’14, pg. 46), in January 2015 I arranged for a private tour in Madagascar through Mr. Jenita Jaozandry, owner of Madagascar Natural Tours (Antananarivo, Madagascar; madagascar-natural-tours.com).

I planned to arrive in Madagascar on June 27, 2015, and fly out on July 17. Mr. Jaozandry arranged my ground itinerary and transportation and booked the best-available 3- or 4-star accommodations, all for $5,347. ...

In her letter “Comparing Business Class, Qatar vs Delta” (March ’16, pg. 24), a subscriber described her unsatisfactory experience on a Delta Air Lines’ business-class flight from New York to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2014.

As world travelers, I think we all can agree that no passenger should be treated rudely or be given peremptory service, especially if she has ponied up for a business-class fare. Having said that, I think we also can agree that, on...

In southwestern France, I took the tour “Dordogne — Prehistoric Cave Art” with Andante Travels (The Clock Tower, Unit 4, Oakridge Office Park, Southampton Rd., Whaddon, Salisbury, England, SP5 3HT, U.K.; in US, 888/331-3476, c), Sept. 7-14, 2015.

I had heard of the Lascaux cave, which was the main reason I went on this tour. However, I had no idea that there are hundreds of various caves and rock shelters in Western Europe that show signs of humans dating back 40,000...

On my trip to Switzerland in June 2015, I flew from London to Geneva. From the lower level of the Geneva Airport, I took the train to Lausanne after purchasing my round-trip ticket in the airport lobby for about $85. The train, which was very well maintained, left exactly on time.

Be sure to write your destination on a card, as the names “Lausanne” and “Lucerne” can sound the same if not carefully pronounced.

Located on Lake Geneva, Lausanne is...

Soon after my husband, John, and I arrived on Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, our hotel hostess, Sophie, asked if we’d like to go see the races. Of course, we said ‘Yes,’ then we piled into her pickup.

When we parked and walked over a small rise, we saw a lovely, blue lake nestled inside a verdant volcano with several hundred folks picnicking on our side of the lake. A race was just starting.

On the opposite side of the caldera, young men in native dress (or...
