Travelers' Intercom

My son and I visited Sri Lanka, Oct. 13-21, 2012, generating our own itinerary from suggestions off TripAdvisor.com (hotels, restaurants) and from the Lonely Planet guidebook and with the help of Mingkhwan Boonmanee of Diethelm Travel in Bangkok (Kian Gwan II Building, 14/F 140/1 Wireless Rd., Lumpini, Patumwan, Bangkok, 10330, Thailand; phone +662 660 7000, www.diethelmtravel.com).

We found Diethelm Travel to be very reliable. They inspected our hotel choices for health and security...

During our 6-day visit to Scotland, May 18-23, 2014, my husband and I stayed at Old Waverley Hotel (43 Princes St., Edinburgh, EH2 2BY, U.K.; phone 0044 [0] 131 556 4648, www.oldwaverley.co.uk), conveniently located across the street from the Waverley rail station.

We highly recommend this charming hotel for its value, location and accommodating staff. We booked five nights there, at £164 (near $279) per night, in a Princes Street-view room. We also had great views of the Scott...

Who would expect there would be massage, let alone excellent massage, in Papua New Guinea?

As someone with low tolerance for so-so massage, I was surprised that, in Port Moresby, massages at the spa of the Airways Hotel (Jackson International Airport, Jacksons Parade, Port Moresby 121, Papua New Guinea; phone +675 324 5200, fax 325 0759, www.airways.com.pg) are always good, no matter which masseuse you get.

In May 2013, as travel manager for a tour company, I put my money where...

I read Randy Keck’s article “Your Travel Legacy — Leaving a Trail to Follow” in his June 2014 “Far Horizons” column.

I have always kept travel logs, what I call TripNotes, ever since I began traveling internationally some 30 years ago. At first, I wrote each day’s activities into a small notebook before bed each night. Then, when email became more ubiquitous, I made notes each day but composed directly onto the computer in Internet cafés as I could find them.

This was an...

I strongly endorse Randy Keck’s recommendation to leave a travel legacy (June ’14, pg. 62).

I have kept journals on our travels for many years. Five years ago I elaborated on these, with the aid of photographs, to produce a printed book of more than 200 pages. On trips made since then, I’ve written new chapters and added them to the book.

I did this for my own satisfaction and also to use as a resource when I had difficulty recalling certain details. In fact, I often sit down...

I read the letter “Turkmenistan – Dangers & Annoyances” (March ’14, pg. 23) about a subscriber’s trip to that country while on a “five ’Stans” tour. We were in Turkmenistan during an Oct. 15-Nov. 4, 2013, tour with MIR Corporation (Seattle, WA 98104; 206/624-7289, www.mircorp.com) but didn’t have the complications and annoyances that he had.

The name of our trip was “Journey Through Central Asia – the Five ’Stans.” There were 14 in our group.

Yes, all of the border...

My husband and I used Schiphol Travel Taxi (Oosterlandenweg 15, 8271 ES IJsselmuiden, The Netherlands; phone +31 38 339 4768, www.schipholtraveltaxi.nl/en) in June 2014. I reserved transportation from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to Rotterdam and back, prepaying with a credit card.

Due to a change in plans, I needed to cancel the return from Rotterdam. That portion of the transit cost $166, and I knew there would be a 10% cancellation fee, based on the terms and conditions listed on the...

A free app called Visitobus (www.visitobus.com) has just been released, offering an audio guide of Paris that can be used on smartphones.

You listen to the guide while riding on a regular city bus on popular bus routes 27, 30, 42 and 69, which include most of the tourist sites in central Paris. In between stops, you learn about local history.

While using the app during my visit at the end of April and beginning of June 2014, I learned snippets of history, saw the layout of the...
